Dr. Spivak is very knowledgable and helpful. He does not candy coat the truth. His staff is also extremely helpful. I always felt very comfortable while in the office. I don't think I would trust anyone more than I trust Dr. Spivak with the operation. While attending the meetings before the surgery he and his staff made my family and I feel confident that he knows his stuff. I honestly have nothing negative to say.

Dr. Spivak performed my revision surgery in October 2010. I originally had a lapband and had complications with it, acid reflux and didn't like the problems with food getting stuck and the sliming. Eventually I had to have all of the liquid removed from the band and was unable to have it refilled, resulting in regaining all the weight I had initially lost.

I went back to Dr. Spivak for a consultation and he recommended I have the revision surgery from Lapband to the sleeve. While I was hesitant about it at first, I felt very confident that Dr. Spivak was giving me good advice and after considering this for a month or so decided to go ahead with the surgery.

The surgery went well, although I ended up needing to have my gallbladder removed during the surgery, I have to say the staff and care at the hospital was excellent. Followup visits have gone very well and I am so grateful for all the help and advice I've been given.

I am a few months out of the surgery and very happy and excited about the sleeve.

I Wish it had been available when I had the band, if it had I would never have had it. My recommendation to anyone considering the band is... don't do it, get the sleeve instead. Result from the band are good at first, but most folks I've talked to that have had the band have ended up with the same problems I experienced.

With the sleeve, I have no restiction on what I eat, but I get full right away, there is no sticking of food, no throwing up, no sliming, and my results have been wonderful so far.

Thank you Dr. Spivak and Staff!

I've been overweight most of my life. For several years I thought about weight loss surgery, but my insurance would not cover it. In the past ten years, I gained almost 100 pounds. I had constant back pain and poor circulation in my right foot. I knew in another 10 years, I would be even heavier. I finally decided to pay for the surgery myself and it was the best decision I've ever made.

I researched doctors and procedures and decided on Dr. Spivak as my surgeon. I attended his seminar and each procedure was explained along with the risks involved. Originally, I was going to have the lap band, but decided the gastric sleeve was a better choice for me. I had my surgery 5 weeks ago and I've lost 20 pounds. I've lost all cravings for sweets and soda. I no longer live just to eat. My back pain is gone and I'm able to exercise again.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Spivak and his staff. Dr. Spivak has always taken time to answer all of my questions. Whenever I have a question or concern, I can talk to someone in his office.

If you're thinking of weight loss surgery, I highly recommend attending Dr. Spivak's seminar.

Dr. Spivak was and still is very professional. His office staff is great and most of them have had a WLS procedure and can answer any questions you may have. DrS is always available to speak with you and will call you back if he is in surgery. He even will call you back on his cell phone if he is out of the office. If you are a patient that loves communication via e-mail well you will have to get over it. This office only faxes and speaks via phone. They will however read your email but don't expect a response via e-mail, you will only be getting a phone call.

I chose Dr. Spivak because he is the best! Being in the medical field I came prepared with tons of questions and actually interviewed DrS. He answered everything in detail and explained in depth. He made me feel very comfortable and welcomed even as I was drilling him with questions. Most doctors would find offense to this however he did not. This is my body and it is my right to know the answer to every question or concern. Dr. Spivak is very well rounded and is not only an excellent physician but his bedside manner is superb. He is very sincere and has a lot of compassion for our well being. Dr. Spivak truly cares. I know I can call him with any question or comment and he will listen and offer advice or a suggestion.

Dr. Spivak is a pioneer in laparoscopy and is the best doctor to have surgery with. After reviewing his credentials and asking numerous questions I decided have the Vertical Gastric Sleeve. Since yo-yoing my entire life and always being the girl with the beautiful face I was so ready to have this surgery. I chose the VGS because I knew it would work for me and the lap banding is too much maintenance. Counting calories and taking diet pills always worked for me so I needed that permanent stomach restriction to feel full without having to take diet pills. I know of several people who had the banding and have not been as successful as they want to be because it is not as restrictive. Let's face it people we are over -weight for a reason...we can't stop over eating and have little to no control of what we put in our mouths!

The anesthesiologists were also amazing. Again I asked them numerous questions about what they would be administering as my “cocktail” and they made sure I did not feel nauseous after surgery. The hospital staff was so wonderful and caring and became my new friends. All in all I was in the hospital for 3 nights and 4 full days. I left the hospital on the 4th evening and was happy to be home. You just have to be mentally prepared and ready to have this surgery. I would highly recommend to each patient you need to meet with a psychiatrist to help you before must mostly after your surgery. You will have so many emotions and you need to realize it’s ok that you can’t eat huge portions or certain foods anymore.

Since having the VGS, I have been so amazed at my weight loss progress. Food no longer consumes me and I am so happy about it not having a hold on my life. My weight was beginning to impact my life personally and professionally. The only regret I have is I wish I would have done this sooner. But at the same time I am happy I waited since the better solution for me was the VGS and not the lap banding. Thank you Dr. Spivak you have made me one happy lady. I am getting healthier every day and feel more confident since I am no longer the girl with such a beautiful face.

Dr.Spivak performed my surgery in May of 2005 and was awesome! He is always very kind and positive, always having a smile on his face. His office staff is always friendly and helpful. I could not have picked a better surgeon to do my surgery! I have lost over 70 pounds and still feel I can come see him with any questions or concerns I may have.

I went to Dr. Spivak because that's who banded both of my parents and I went to his seminar 100% sure I was going to be banded as well. That all changed as soon as this brilliant Doctor started talking about the gastric sleeve. He presents all your options out there on the table, is realistic about what you can expect and he let's you make the decision about what is right for you. Brenda in his office is the best thing since sliced bread! I've called her with the craziest pre-surgery questions or questions regarding things I have read on the boards...she always tells me what's what and does so in a respectful manner and she always has time for me. What an awesome person! She's a true patient advocate and Dr. Spivak has found gold by having her. I will update more on my after-surgery experience but right now I couldn't ask for anything better.

I first met Dr. Spivak at his Saturday seminar. He was very thorough and did not hide anything about the surgery. After my surgery i was rushed back to the OR because I had a blood vessel in my stomach burst. I was throwing up blood thru my mouth and nose. Dr. Spivak was there for me. He did not leave my side.He came and saw me at least twice per day and was very positive about my recovery. His staff has been very nice and helpful as well.

First I must state that Dr. Spivak did my LapBand surgery and I have had better than expected results. I researched several surgeons in the Houston area, attended several seminars and consultations with different surgeons and also read all the reviews on the different message board about WLS surgeons. I was most impressed with Dr. Spivak's experience and the number of WLS he has perfomed. I chose to go with experience, especially after my consultation which left me feeling that the Dr. Spivak and his staff really cared about my success and are accessible when I need them. I called so many times with questions after my surgery and I always received an answer immediately.

I have had several adjustments, because I wanted this lap band tool to work. I certainly didn't want to have the surgery and then just cheat or refuse to come in to maintain this band. The adjustments have been appropriate, and I continue to adjust as needed to maintain my weight goal.

I am very please with my choice in both having the surgery and the surgeon.

I have always had a positive experience during office visits both before and after surgery. The staff and office manger, Brenda, are absolutely wonderful, and most helpful. Rachel has been most helpful and always encouraging.

If you have any doubts, I highly recommend Dr. Spivak.

Umm, nothing negative I could say. This was the best decison I made.

Dr. Spivak and his office staff are really great! It has been 3 years since my lapband surgery, I have reached my goal and am now maintaining. I have only had good positive experiences with Dr. Spivak and staff. I have able to have adjustments as needed. I highly recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone considering WLS.

My first impression was that he was quick to the point and I liked that and that impression has not changed over the last 9 years since my lap band surgery. His office and staff is the absoulte best. I have never had to wait in the waiting room and it is always in and out. I have had only one complication and Dr Spivak was at my beckoned call. I went back in for gall bladder removal and he was just as good the second time around. He always shows an interest in me and my well being taking time to listen to any concern I may have. On a scale of one to 10 he is at the top and his mannerisms are great. I would like to say something negetive but there has not been anything negetive for me. My goal was to have this surgery in an attempt to curtail my appetite. I never wanted to diet and never have. I lost 40 lbs without trying and then have slowly lost another 50 for a total of 90. No dieting and can eat anything. I stay away from breads and eat other things slowly. I have found the best form of dieting is an exercise regiment on a schedule.

I chose Dr. Spivak after seeing results on a bypass and band patients. I'm glad I chose him. He is wonderful. The only regret I have is not chosing to do my bypass surgery sooner. I will tell you that you will not a better Doctor or staff than right here. They treat you with respect and encouragement. If you are thinking of weight surgery don't hesitate. Dr. Spivak will take very good care of you before and after surgery. I have no regrets on what I chose.

I met with several surgeons before selecting Dr. Spivak. One of the most important factors for me when it came to selecting a surgeon was experience and Dr. Spivak has been a pioneer in bariatric surgery. It was comforting to know that he has been doing these surgeries for more than a decade and participated in many trials. Upon meeting him for the first time I was impressed with his friendliness and professionalism. He is truly commited to helping you fight obesity. (Unlike many of the surgeons that I had previously met with, who seemed more concerned with booking a surgery and getting their check asap.) rnrn Dr. Spivak and his staff are amazing. I always get a return phone call within MINUTES not hours. No question is too silly. In fact the night before surgery at 10pm I had a question and Dr. Spivak himself called me back within ten minutes. The staff has always been able to answer any questions that I've had and are cheerful when you come into the office. Dr. Spivak and his office offer exceptional patient care. I really can not say enough good things about them. rn

Dr. Spivak and his team are very professional. From the beginning of my decision to have the Lap Band procedure, he and his office made me feel extremely comfortable and answered any and all of my questions. Deciding to have such a procedure can be a scary and intimidating event, but due to their sincere desire for me to feel comfortable, this fear was eliminated. So far, I have lost 60 pounds, and I am still in the process of reducing. Dr. Spivak has been extremely patient with the numerous questions I have had about continued weight loss. He is a fantastic surgeon, has an incredible bedside manner and his office team are always pleasant and supportive. I would rate both he and his team a 10 out of 10.

Dec 09 Update: I had a small refill this past year in July (2 and half years after surgery, no leaks), only .2cm of saline added. I have been at goal and maintaining. Dr. Spivak and staff have continued to supportive, and my experience has been excellent over the almost 3 years since lapband surgery.

Surgery and year following:
There aren't enough kind words to say abut Dr. Spivak and his team at the office. Staff were friendly and took time to listen and answer all my questions. The seminar was casual, attended by Dr. Spivak's former patients sharing their experiences. Most of the staff took the time to visit with me and some remembered our conversations on the phone. Dr. Spivak himself is very knowledgeable, and took time to go over the different weight loss surgery optiions. He outlined the benefits and risk. I felt much better informed after his seminar. At the consultation, Dr. Spivak was genuinely interested in my questions and concerns. He took the time the answer each one. On the day of surgery, he met me before the surgery to check on how I was doing. And again after surgery in the recovery room he stopped by to check on me and see if I had questions. The office has called on me since I have been home. Nothing but the best from this surgeon.

April 4, 2004, Lap-band. Start wt. 354, today 340. Dr. Spivak & staff, all friendly and pleasant. Hospital experience, nothing negative.

May 10, 2006, band slipped, repair. Today wt. 125. Dr. Spivak & staff, kind & efficient. Hospital experience, a few problems with TV in room, not a concern for me. Overall, pleasant.

April 23, 2007 ready to start wt loss again. I decided to wait one year after repair of band slippage to get another fill. This was really too long. Today wt is 249. I can't believe I gained an average of 10 lbs. per month this last year! Any way, Dr. Spivak & staff, still very understanding and super nice. I have nothing but good to say about them.

December 1, 2009, today wt 127. I had all fill removed today, I am past my goal wt. I was thinking about 150. With fill, was still losing down to 127. I am going to try to monitor myself closely & if I start gaining past what I feel is acceptable, I will go back for a fill. Dr. Spivak & staff, all make you feel accepted and comfortable. Nice people.

I was impressed with Dr. Spivak on my first visit. He listened to my questions and concerns and answered all of my questions. I had several meeting with Dr. Spivak to discuss my sergury and with each meeting I was more certain he was the right Doctor to do the surgery. His office staff is very helpful and eager to answer any questions. I have heard many stories from other people about problems they have had with the surgery they had done by other surgons. I did not experience any problems with my surgery and I know it is because I chose the correct surgon. What impressed me most about Dr. Spivak is how he listens to his patients. I have lost 52 lbs to date and feel wonderful. My Diabetes is gone along with the need for other medications. Thank you Dr. Spivak!

My impression of Dr.Spivak was that he was so geniune, and that he really cared for you and your weight loss journey. Even 2 years later, he is still excited to see your weight loss and how you are doing with the band. The office staff is wonderful. They are always so friendly and helpful! The support group has been a God send for me personally. It's a place to come to and be with people that know what you have been through and are still going through. No band is alike, and it is so insightful to hear and be apart of their journey.I would recommend a support to anyone who is having weightloss surgery. When the weight starts coming off and you are discovering a new you, the group is there to help you along the way and to help deal with the emotional side. I would definetely recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone. His bedside manner was very reassuring and caring. He is honest with you and the expectations of the surgery. He is just a great doctor.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he was a very kind and he seemed so excited to help me over to the thin side of life. The staff at the office have been so helpful. Everytime I call, they seem to know who I am and always have something wonderful and helpful to tell me. I had my surgery on July 13, 2009 at the Bay Plaza Hospital in Houston, Texas. Even the staff at the hospital were wonderful to me. The hospital nurse that took care of me during my operation called me the next day to make sure I was feeling fine and the next day the doctors office called me to ask me if I had any questions or if I needed anything. I have never had a hospital or a doctors office ever call me to see how I was doing after a surgury. I am so happy I chose Dr. Spivak and I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Spivak was very informative. My impression has not changed. He has a wonderful, caring office staff. Everything has been great so far. He really seems to care about his patients. To me, it seems like he wants to be sure you are happy with the results. Yes, he had a structured aftercare program. Dr. Spivak went over all the risks regarding the surgery during the orientation, then once again in the one-on-one visit. I would defintely refer Dr. Spivak to anyone wanting to have the surgery. Dr. Spivak is a wonderful doctor, with both his bedside manner and surgical competence.

I did 2 years of research before selecting Dr. Spivak for my Lap Band surgery. It was important to me to approach this life changing experience with caution and wanted a physician that I felt cared about his patients while not comprising their immediate and long term heatlh. I was very impressed to read that Dr. Spivak was also chosen to instruct other physicians in this procedure which told me he is highly respected and takes his patients care serious. I attended his seminar prior to making a final surgery decision and although I had read numerous sites about these procedures, I still walked out of this seminar learning new things and feeling confident that Dr. Spivak was going to be my physician of choice. He was very clear on the risks and how the various bariatric procedures vary depending on the patient. His staff is always pleasant and helpful. The aftercare process not only offers a monthly support group meeting which is critical to continue the learning process of this life style change but it offers shoulders to lean on for guidance as you deal with the new challenges of this surgery. I love his bedside manner and I have felt very comfortable with him from day one! I would recommend that all future patients do their homework and attend his seminar to ensure they understand the entire process before taking on this hugh decision. I'm excited with my continued weight loss and I know I've made the right decision for my health and look forward to feeling better and looking great! Thank you Dr. Spivak and office staff for taking this journey with me.rnrnChristina Walsh

If anyone was nervous about the Lap-Band Surgery, it was me. I came to one of Dr. Spivak's seminars and was very impressed. Dr. Spivak gave the seminar himself to a room of about 10 of us. I decided that day that this was best for me.rnrnDr. Spivak has excellent bedside manners and is very easy to talk to and communicate with.rnHe is honest and has your best interest at heart.rnrnAfter my surgery, he followed up with me and his staff was very caring and knowledgeable.rnrnI highly recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone considering the Lap-Band surgery.

Prior to going through with the placement of my lapband I had been researching it for about 2 years and met with other surgeons. Once I met with Dr. Spivak and his staff I knew I felt comfortable asking them questions and having him complete my surgery. Dr. Spivak has great bedside manner and is very patient when speaking with you. Through my journey Dr. Spivak and his staff have been helpful in answering all my questions. I have been able to call and ask them quick questions without feeling like I am bothering them.rnI have enjoyed coming to the support group meetings Dr. Spivak has at his office. We are a smaller group than some of the other support groups I have been to, but the others are very helpful and supportive. I am very satisfied with my decision to choose Dr. Spivak and his staff and continue to use their support as I go through this journey.

Dr.Spivak is such a kind man, I feel blessed to have him as my doctor. I had come to him for a band placement and was very pleased with my my experience. I had lost 50 pounds and was very excited. Then I found out I had breast cancer and I had to stop the whole weight loss program for a while. Dr. Spivak was very involved and for my surgeries he let the saline out so that I would not swell. He was very interested and always offered his support, then he was here when I was through with the treatments to put me back on track. Not only a great surgeon but a great human being.

Great first impression....found him to be approachable and informative, even with the hard topics I found him to be honest and forthright. I still have a very good opinion of him, insofar as he himself has been there for me even on an emergency basis. His staff has also been caring and helpful. I give him a very high rating in all areas.

I thought that he was very attentive to my needs and felt very comfortable with him. When my band slipped, he didn't hesitate to take me to surgery to fix the band. I came to see Dr Spivak in January of 2007 and had my surgery that Feburary. My first impression was that he was very warm and knowlegable of all of my options. He explained the difference between the different surgeries and I ended up going with the Lap Band. Over time I feel that he has only been more help. If I come in for an adjustment and don't lose as much weight as I wish I had of I don't feel like he'll be upset or dissapointed. He encourages me and talks through ways I can help my weight loss. The office staff is wonderful. Everyone is so sweet and more than happy to help answer questions of point you in the the right direction. I can't say that there is anything I dislike about Dr Spivak, he's been a great dr. I think people should just understand that this Dr gets right down to business and you can tell his job is very important to him. He doesn't joke around a lot or things like that but that's ok because his professionalism is much more important. He made sure that I knew as much as I could about aftercare and the nutrition classes they have each month. Every time I come in I feel like I learn more and more. Obviously the risk of surgery are very important so Dr. Spivak made it very clear to me the negitive aspects of having a surgery like this. I would give him a 9 out of 10 because I think we can all make ourselves better and as wonderful as he is I think there are little things that can be improved. I would have to say that this surgical competence is wonderful and I believe his bedside manner was well... but let's face it... I was a little out of it after surgery! I would highly recommend Dr Spivak if you are looking to have weight loss surgery but remember... not every one loses weight like those people in the magazines or on the billboards that say *results not typical. It may take longer than you want but just like anything it's a lifestyle change but in the end you'll be happy you did it!

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he seemed to understand my wieght struggles. His bedside manner was very comforting. Overtime I have grown to appreciate his knowledge and his conservative style. He continues to encourage me and astound me with his infinite knowledge of the lap-band procedure. His office staff is very supportive and friendly. One time I was several hours late for an appointment(due to Houston Traffic)and I still got to see the doctor. I really have not found anything that I do not like about Dr. Spivak or his office staff. rnExpect that you will appreciate the structured aftercare program provided by Dr. Spivak and his staff.rnOverall, I would rate this experience as a 10 and I love my new life as a lighter person. His bedside manner and his competence are my favorite attributes.

When I first met Dr. Spivak he was honest, knowledgable, and real. His office staff is wonderful. They are encouraging and inviting. They make me feel welcomed and always try to accomodate my schedule. He lets you know that the surgery is not a quick fix and you have to do work also. He does have a support group that meets every other Tuesday evenings. The support group has been a great help to me. It is an accountability group and provides information relating to needs of baractric patients. I highly recommend attending the meetings! I also highly recommend Dr. Spivak as a doctor!!!!

The staff and Dr. Spivak have been excellent. I was very scared to have the surgery, but they made me feel comfortable and answered all my questions. At first I regretted having the surgery, but once you get in your routine and the results start showing, I think it was the greatest decision I ever made!

Dr. Spivack is awesome! He was a very nice guy who you can tell is very concerned about your health, and not just your money. Because I was one of the smaller patiants he has treated, he was upfront with me and told me that I might not lose as much wieght as I was expecting. He did not lead me on to believe that I would end up being a size 1. He made sure that I knew what I was getting myself into before I paid. the staff here is great and very helpful. They are down to earth and realize that schedules are very busy, and they are always accomodating! He has a very structured aftercare program to make sure that you lose the most weight possible and stay healthy. He addressed the risk of surgury amazingly! He told us what the possibilities that might happen and what his numbers were. He has never lost a patiant, and has been doing this for a VERY long time. He is an overall amazing doctor!! He has performed surgery on me and 4 of my family members. I reccomend him to anyone looking to find the perfect doctor!

My first impression of my doctor was he seemed to be a very personal yet I professional doctor. My impression of him was very precise, for over time he seemed to be blunt and to the point which is something I appreciate. His office staff was beyond friendly and supporting. Future patients should know that in comparison to other bariatric surgeons, Spivak has a bedside manner out of this world that lasts beyond the actual day of the procedure. He emphasizes aftercare program tremendously and goes the extra mile to offer support group sessions. The risks of surgery were addressed precisely. I would rate him overall on a scale of 1-10 an 11. I feel surgical competence is just as important as bedside manner and Dr. Spivak is the best of both worlds.

Dr Spivak is amazing! He is so kind and his staff is supportive and caring. Dr Spivak understands that by the time you arrive at the decision to have surgery, you have suffered enough. Having the surgery is all about the aftercare and you need to chose a surgeon that you like and feel comfortable with. I have some friends who used two different surgeons (over my objections) and they are both so unhappy and never want to go to the office for an adjustment because they feel belittled or bad about their progress (or lack there of). Dr. Spivak will never make you feel like that. You have to go the office for adjustments because that is how the band works! His office is a place where you want to go because he wants you to suceed. I would highly recommend Dr. Spivak and I wish my friends had listened to me before they had the procedure!

I had my lap band surgery on 04/30/08 I had just lost my mother at age 64 to complications of diabetes and obesity in March of that year. I did not want to die this way. Her dying wish was for me to have this surgery. I decided I wanted to get something to remind me of my mother's wish and motivate me of my surgery as well, a tattoo to be precise. I did. I got a tattoo of the amount I paid cash for my surgery on my right wrist on the inside in a brown color. $12,400.00 rnrnEvery time my hand goes to my mouth I see this, it is my little reminder of my of muy dedication to my self, my band and my mothers dying wish.

I was impressed with the presentation of information during my informational seminar and the willingness of the staff to help me work through the countless hurdles presented by my insurance company. The staff were quick to answer questions as they came up and to help me find the right people for answers - if they didn't know them - they still help me although it has been 1.5 years since surgery. Dr. Spivak was open with me as I weighed my options of bypass versus lapband and didn't not try to make that decision for me - I felt that I was given the information I needed to make a decision that was right for me. Dr. Spivak and his office continue to help and support me as I continue to talk with them after this life changing decision and I am still pleased with my decisions - both with my doctor and type of surgery.

I liked Dr. Spivak at our first meeting. He was business-like and professional, but caring. His ongoing care has reflected my initital impressions. His office runs well, you are seen within a few minutes of your appointment - an important time saver - no sitting for hours waiting for the doctor!rnrnHe advised me to remove my gall bladder at the same time I underwent RNY, and this alleviated the problem that many other have experienced, causing a second surgery. His predictions of my recovery were spot-on as were his predictions of my weight loss. Over 85lbs in 6 months - with no adverse outcomes. rnrnI was; however, shocked at how much pain was involved following surgery and the next week or so, and felt I could have been better prepared to expect this - but, that might have caused me to rethink the surgery altogether. So, this is a judgement call and I don't know which way was right. rnrnI'm not a medical professional, but the total absence of any bad outcomes and the accurate expectation setting by Dr. Spivak make me believe I made the right choice in chosing him to be my surgeon. rnrnI was a self-pay patient, and as an interesting note - When I filed my income tax for 2008, the large medical deduction (along with increased charitable giving) netted me a refund that was almost 25% of the cost of the surgery - a huge bonus!

Dr Spivak isvery personable & caring. He truly cares about his patients. He is very professional. You can tell that he loves what he does, it isn't just a job for him. His office staff is really great also. They are very helpful, and willing to answer any question that you may have. I had a very pleasant experience & recommend Dr Spivak to anyone that I hear is interested in weight loss surgery.

I was extremely nervous thinking about having surgery, but much more nervous about going through with it. I was instantly at ease with Dr. Spivak. He has a calming nature and is very attentive to your questions, expectations, fears, and feelings. After meeting with him, I was convinced that I would definitely go through with it. Dr. Spivak is by far a wonderful surgeon and doctor. I never feel out of place when I stilll to this day ask questions or have concerns. If I had a choice to do it again, I would. No one could ask for a better doctor.

Spivak is a low key, gentle surgeon. He won't overwhelm you with geniality but he seems to genuinely care about obesity and the \"slow killer\" it is. I had my gastric bypass last week. It was tough since my family all had a cold the day I came back from surgery. But coming to see Dr. Spivak today for my one week check up, he reminded me \"You did it!\" It was all I needed to hear to remember that I am on the path to a new life. rnrnProfessionally, he answers all your questions and takes time with you as you need it. He is a great surgeon that I highly recommend.

I was so excited when I hear about the lap-band surgery. I have been over weight most of my life and I would loose five or ten pounds, but then would gain it all back. I was having problems with arthritis in my hips and I had decided that if I didn't loose the weight, I would not be able to walk before long.rnrnI came for the seminar and really got excited after that. Just knowing that it could be reversed if needed was a big relief.rnrnDr. Spivak and the staff were really great. They made me feel very comfortable and at ease.rnrnMy insurance would not cover my surgery, so I used my savings. It was well worth it.rnrnThe day of surgery, I was in early on Friday morning and went home that afternoon. I went back to work on Monday.rnrnThis surgery is a life style change. Eat healthy and exercise.

I went into Dr. Spivak's saturday morning seminar knowing I needed help to lose weight for my health. I was impressed with him from that moment. I knew he was the one that I wanted to do my surgery as his record was great too. His office staff was so nice and friendly and continue to be to this day. rnI had my surgery in Jan 2008 and have lost 162 lbs so far. He was easy to contact throughout the process or if I had any questions or worries he or his office staff were incredibly helpful. I had only met one other bariatric surgeon and just didn't feel it was a right fit for me, but knew Dr. Spivak was. rnI never regret choosing Dr. Spivak. I have not had any complications, he is a magnificent surgeon and I think his bedside manner was wonderful. I found him very friendly but very serious about his work. He answered all my questions whatever they were.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was the he was caring and compassionate. As time went by he was still those things as well as very skilled and experienced in both the band a G. bypass fields. His office staff is very caring and kind. Some will even share their own experiences. I think that future patients should know that Dr. Spivak has done very many of these procedures so he will not be learning on you. He does emphasize aftercare and has many aftercare groups and meeting you can attend which expands your knowledge and makes you feel even more supported. He did go over possible risks of the surgery. Overall, I feel Dr.Spivak and his staff are excellent and am so glad I picked him for my surgery. I do believe thar surgical competence is more important than bedsiade manner but I do feel Dr. Spivak has both!

I was completly impressed with Dr. Spivak and his staff from day one. Over time I fell in love with the whole team. Everyone was so helpful from day one. I never felt like I was a bother to anyone including Dr. Spivak. I have encouraged soo many people to call him first. The staff was very helpful after my surgery. I had alot of questions and they were all happy to answer any question no matter how ridiculous i thought the question was. Dr. Spivak is a gental man who takes the time for all of his patients. rnI am soo happy that I came to this office. My life has changed and I have never been this happy.rnThank you Dr. Spivak and staff!!!!!

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he was serious surgeon focused on the medical procedures but that he didn't necessarily possess the best bedside manner. He was professional but no extra warm/fuzzies. rnrnOver time, I feel he's still a serious surgeon focused on the medicine, but he also seems genuinely interested in the success of his patients and is realistic in the type of goals he'd like his patients to achieve depending upon the surgery they chose.rnrnDr. Spviak's office staff is always courteous and very responsive.rnrnThere isn't anything I don't like about Dr. Spivak.rnrnFuture patients should know that if they chose him, they chose the best bariatric surgeon available in Houston.rnrnDr. Spivak and his staff say aftercare is key to success.rnrnDr. Spivak went over the risks of all the surgery options, the overall rates of risk and his own personal statistics.rnrnOn a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, I'd give Dr. Spivak a 9.rnrnSurgical competence is great and bedside manner is that of any professional.

Dr. Spivak was very personable and truly showed an interest in you as a person from day one. His continuous treatment has been extraordinary. He personally came in on a weekend to see me to resolve an overfill that I had, which was very impressive from my point of view. Dr. Spivak's office staff are excellent. They have always been very efficient and very personable. I have nothing negative to say about Dr. Spivak or his office staff. Being someone that tends to be very particular, they are extraordinary. I would highly recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone. His knowledge and him being so personable each and every time you see him is truly amazing. He and his office staff seem to always remember who you are and acknowledge you by name. With all the patients they see, that is very impressive. I couldn't have ask for anyone any better to perform my surgery or provide the after care than Dr. Spivak and his office have provided.

I had lab band surgery with Dr. Spivak in July 2007 and it was the best decision I have ever made. I was 44 years old at the time and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Dr. Spivak and his entire office staff have worked with me throughout the entire process. I would recommend them to anyone. rnrnNot only have I lost a lot of weight, I've gained an entirely new perspective on life. I can now enjoy so many more things that I never enjoyed. I am a much happier person.rnrnI would do this all over again, regardless of the cost. Although, I do know that I will never have to worry about my weight again.

I first came in to see Dr Spivak in Feb. of 2006 @ that time I was about 495Lbs and a smoker. Dr Spivak told me unless I stopped smoking and lost at least 30Lbs he could not do the surgery, but he could refer me to a Dr that would do the surgery I said no did what he asked and returned back to his office in April 2006 at that time my weight dropped to 465 Lbs and I quit smoking.. Dr Spivak agreed to do the surgery (Lap-Band System) and did so on May 6, 2006. Since that time I have lost a total of 230 Lbs. and my life has changed completely. Dr Spivak would be the only Dr that I would recommend to do any type of weight loss surgery not only because of his skills but also his human side also his bedside manor is just wonderful. I can't tell you how happy and energetic I am today. I was able to take my two girls to disney over the holidays, and not only was I able keep up with them but I also had to hear them both tell me to slow down that I walk to fast now that's A miracle. One last thing I would not want to forget about the office staff, Not only are they 100% supportive of you.But they are all there for the patient and his or her success.rnrn David B. I was considering a sergery for couple of years. Went to several presentations to decide if I'm ready and if the doctor is right. Dr. Spivak and his office impressed me the most and helped me to finally dicede. The presentation was very helpful to understand my optoins in all aspects, all my questions were answered by Dr. Spivak and his actual patients who expirienced and went through ups and downs of the procedure and aftermath. Staff was and continues to be extrimally helpful in handling any issues or concerns every time. Doctor Spivak and his staff are very careing, patient and personable from the moment you come to see them first through all the aftercare visits and adjustments. rnThere is a lot of attention to each patient to make you feel comfortable about the procedure and progress after. Scheduling the sergery was very easy, I got a lot of help and isntructions on how to prepare for sergery and what to expect befor and after. Dr. Spivak spoke with me before and after the procedur, so I was calm and knew what was happening at all times. rnrnThe best part, Dr Spivak performed the sergery in way that left me with just one little tinny tiny scar, I'm not sure how exactly it's called, but if you look at my stomach - no one could even guess I had a sergery at all. rnrnThe procedure was a life changing event for me, and I am so greatfull to Dr. Spivak and his staff for all they've done for me.rnrnI would highly recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone who considers bariatric sergery!

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he really cared about the well being of his patients. He went over the process of both the lap band and by-pass surgery and I had a very crystal clear understanding after leaving the seminar. Over time my impression has not changed at all. He made me feel very comfortable about the procedure and my choice in chosing him as the doctor that would perform the surgery. Overall, I would rate Dr. Spivak at the top of the list for the lapband. I have been very pleased with the results and find that the staff are just as wonderful as the doctor.

Dr. Spivak has been very personable and professional with my journey in weight loss. He is very honest on what to expect after surgery if you follow the plan. The staff has always been very helpful even some of them share their personal experiences. After surgery someone always calls to check on you and check your progress. I checked around Houston to find the best lapband surgeon and I did with Dr. Spivak. I would recommend Dr. Spivak and his staff to anyone. They has saved my life.

When I first met Dr. Spivak I felt immedialtely at ease. I had met another surgeon a couple of weeks earlier which almost made me change my mind about what I wanted to do. He seemed very cold and the feeling I got when I walked into the front door of their office was not welcoming. Dr. Spivak as well as his staff were very kind and very professional during my first visit, my surgery and have been for all my visits after. Honestly I don't think there is anything negative I can say about them. One thing I can say, if there are people even thinking about going through the surgery , they should seriously consider Dr. Spivak. I couldn't have chosen a better doctor!

Dr. Spivak was extremely knowledgeable and answered every question I had. His professionalism was among the best I have ever seen.rnMy impression of Dr Spivak only got better with time.rnDr Spivak's office staff is also very professional and helpful. When you ask questions they don't make you feel like they are being put out.rnI cant find anything that I didn't like about Dr Spivak except that he is not a COWBOYS fan.rnVery good followup program and support networkrnHe was very open about both the pros and cons of surgery, but answered every question.rnCompared to every doctor I have seen in my lifetime he is the best in every aspect.rnBoth are better than great, they are phenomenal.rnrnI am 20 months post surgery and have dropped from 420lbs to 270lbs. I am no longer diabetic or have high blod pressure. I can once again play outside with my son and anything that I want. I went surfing in Hawaii last year and zip lining in Costa Rica.rnrnMy wife is 19 months out and has went from 260lbs to 135lbs. She is no longer diabetic and can do anything she wants for the first time in years. She also went zip lining in Costa Rica and swam with the sharks in Hawaii. She is also now able to run and play with our son. This surgery was a life changing, as well as life saving for me, for both of us. We both highly recommend this surgery to anyone who wants to change their life and back to a healthy lifestyle.

I was very pleased with choosing Dr. Spivak. From the moment that I saw a TV commercial to checking out his website and finally to coming to a free meeting to see if the lab band procedure was right for me. Dr. Spivak answered all of my questions that night and I knew that I was destined to have the lap band procedure. In the nearly 20 months since I've had the procedure I've lost ~ 140 lbs to date. It's truly a modern day miracle to transform one's life like this. I'm a walking advertisement for Dr. Spivak and the lap band procedure everyday. I attend the support groups and would highly recommend Dr. Spival to anyone considering the procedures. He explains everything about the procedure and how it is to be used as a tool to reach your goal. That is the key to change your old life into a new one you have to use the \"tool\" correctly. It's not a race to the finish line, so lose quicker than others but it's how you want to spend the rest of your life. I know now that I can accomplish anything once I've conquered weight loss and maintenance. I was always good at losing on other diets, but horrible at maintaining. With the tool, I can now maintain my weight. I won't ever have the band taken out if I can help from it. I owe everything to Dr. Spivak and I just can't sing his praises enough. Only issue I ever had following surgery was that I had a longer recovery due to trying to get the gas to get out of my system following the surgery. After that it was smooth sailing for me. You won't be sorry by going forward with the lab band procedure and choosing Dr. Spivak. rnrnSincerely,rnCarol

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he was a care individual and a partner with me in my weight loss venture. He gave me as much time as I needed during my first consultation and answered every question. I didn't leave his office wondering what he had just said. rnrnHis office staff is a dream. From the very first phone call, fact finding then making the appt, everyone has been pleasant and helpful. I had called other doctors prior to choosing Dr. Spivak and believe me, this is not always the case.rnrnI was very impressed with the follow up after my surgery. Not only did his nurse call me but the hospital called me twice after to follow up with me to ensure I was recovering as normal.rnrnEverything was explained throughly during the Saturday orientation I attended. He opened up after the presentation for Q&A, and everyone's question was answered until no more hands came up.rnrnBoth Dr.'s Spivak's bedside manner and surgical competence are excellent.

He understood that sometime the weight does not come off with out assistance.rnrnThe only change I had towards him was that he cares even more about his patients rnrnHis staff and office are perfection at its BEST!rnrnThat he will tell you the truth even if you do not want to hear it. rnrnHe knows what he is doing and he is the best in the business and that he will never treat you like you are just a \"patient\". He has always had time to just sit and talk with anyone. I have never seen him in any hurry running from one patient to another.rnrnThat is a major priorty of his and his staff.rnrnI have been able to share my story here in the office during seminars.rnrnHe wants the real life stories on what works and what did not work. and I dont mean CHEAT the program.rnrnrnRating 11 out of 10 rnrnBoth!!!! and his continued support! I have had some medical complications arise and fhad to have the fulid removed from my band July 2007. He told me to take 6 months to recover and even if I did gain weight back that it would be for my best health. rnrnI have never felt like this was ever a mistake and I would do it over again. My brother is going thru the approval process right now. I will tell anypone and everyone about this weight management program anytime. rnrnrnThanks and good luck to all!rnrnStacy Lusk

I first visited Dr. Spivak in March 2008. I attended an informational seminar which was held at his office. I was very impressed with his staff. They were very friendly and well informed. Based on this I decided to go ahead and do the consultation that same day. His staff handled all f the necessary paperwork to get me approved for the lap band procedure and I was fortunate enough that it was covered!rnrnI had the procedure in September of 2008. The surgical staff was wonderful. I met with them prior to the surgery and they answered all of my questions and concerns. The procedure went very well and everyone including D. Spivak was great! They helped me during my time inthe recovery room and then encouraged me to drink that bottle of water! when you have the procedure you will know what I mean!rnrnFrom the time I checked in until I was on my way home was about 5 hours. Everything from the pre-op to the first days after durgery went exactly as Dr. Spivak had informed me. I followed hsi instructions to the letter and then met with him as instructed afterwards.rnrnDr. Spivak is a very good doctor. He is extremely knowledgeable on the procedure and if you do your research you will find that he is one of the best barriactric surgeons in the country. He is very friendly and is always smiling. This has been true from the time I first met him at the seiminar and through my secon fill which I just had on 1/6/09.rnHe encourages you to follow the suggeste eating habits as well as the recommended exercise regiment. There is also a support group available for you to attend at his office that meets monthly.rnrnAs for results, as of my second fill which was 4 months after the surgery, I have lost 93 lbs.!!!!!rnrnThanks for everything Dr. Spivak

Dr. Spivak did my Lap-Band surgery. It was my first surgery ever and I was nervous! But the staff and Dr. Spivak made it easy. Everyone happily answered all of my questions and understood my nervousness.rnrnAlso, I have been very happy with the aftercare I have received. They followed up with me after the surgery and have helped me with my additional fills. Since I don't handle pain well, I was concerned at first, but now I see that it's no big deal.rnrnMy only recommendation is that if you sign up for this procedure, go for the option of having unlimited fills. I only got 3 and even though I have one left, I think I may need more. rnrnOverall, I can strongly recommend Dr. Spivak and his staff.

I researched a lot of doctors and attended many information sessions. rnSo, first, let me say that I really like Dr. Spivak and his staff. Dr. Spivak is very personable and he takes time with his patients. I have never felt \"rushed\" through. His staff is awesome too. They are friendly, patient, and extremely caring. rnFrom the initial meeting I have never looked back. The 'presentation' is extremely informative and great. rnDr. Spivak is incredably honest and forthright. My surgery went well and my recovery time was minimal. I have never regreted choosing him as my doctor. rnElizabeth Fawcett

The decision to have the surgery was a well-thought out decision as chosing the surgeon. I made the correct choice: Spivak. I have referred 4 other patients to Spivak who did have the surgery and are extremely satisfied with Spivak. The staff is helpful andw walks one through the entire process.

First impression was he is not here to sell me on a surgery he is here to help me decide what is right for me.rnMy impression just improved every time I have gotten to talk with him or listened to what he had to say or read one of his papers.rnHis office staff is amazing and all of them are willing to go out on a limb for you. rnThere was nothing that I disliked about him or his staff.rnHe is off the chart and an amazing man and truly cares about his patients.rnHe stresses over and over that this is not a quick fix it is a life change and a tool to help you, but you have to be willing to do the work.rnYes they have a structured aftercare program.rnHe tells you the inns and outs of this surgery.rnHe is off the charts in rating.rnBoth are off the charts.rn

I had attended numerous information sessions before attending Dr. Spivak's session on bariatric surgery. I was impressed with his honesty and forthrightness regarding weight loss surgery. When I attended other information sessions, I felt like someone was trying to \"sell me\" something. Dr. Spivak took the time to help me decide what procedure was best for my personal situation. He regarded me as an individual with individual needs and situations. I knew more about what to expect of myself after visiting with him for 15 minutes than I did from all the other visits combined. It has been 18 months since having Lapband surgery, and I have lost 120 pounds. I am more confident in the partnership that I have with Dr. Spivak and his staff than ever before. The entire staff is professional, personable and dedicated to helping each person attain their dreams. I always feel welcome when I go back no matter how long I've been away.

It all started out as a very good experience. I went to a seminar that was VERY INFORMATIVE, more then any other seminar I had attended. Dr. Spivak was very helpful to answer every question/concern that I had before, during, and after my surgery. Although I was a bit afraid everyone at Dr. Spivak's office was very supportive. Dr. Spivak is not just a surgeon but a very good man. His staff is a bunch of very good down to earth people that have always made me feel comfortable to come in for my fills. I have other friends and family that are patients of Dr. Spivak and they too have a good experience through their process. It has been one year since my surgery and I'm so happy. Thanks to lapband and a GREAT Dr. I am the size I was 5 years ago :o)

After researching many weight loss options and doctors I felt extrememly comfortable choising Dr. Spivak and the band. Upin first meeting Dr. Spivak I was impressed by his countanence and compassion. He is such a sweet doctor who cares deeply about his patients and wants to see them succeed and live healthy, happy, lives! Since my surgery in 2003, I have done just that! The aftercare program has helped me maintain a healthy weight and encouraged me to continue my new lifestyle. Dr. Spivak gets top rating from me! A true 10! His surgical competence and bedside manner are equally great and overall he is a wonderful man and an amazing doctor!

Dr. Spivak made a great first impression on me. Over time it became evident that my first impression was correct. He's open and direct and very easy to talk to. The staff has been consistently responsive to my needs. Anyone looking for a surgeon should kno10 w that they can totally trust Dr. Spivak. I was given lots of material about aftercare as well as all aspects of the surgical process. I would rate Dr. Spivak a 10 out of 10. He is competent surgically and has a great bedside manner. I am confident in recommending him.

Dr. Spivak was very concern about my well being. He was very professional and honest. Overtime he is the same sweet person and I only will trust him as my surgeon. When I was in the Hospital he always came to visit me and to make sure the Doctors were treating me the proper medication. He did not have to do any of those things but he did. I will always remember him and recommend him to others who are considering weight loss surgery.rnrnOn a scale of 1-10 He gets a big 10 from me.

He was very helpful in explaining the surgery and answered all the questions I had and so was the staff. The overall experience was great. I wish I would have had the gastric though because it seems like people lose more weight.

Deciding to have lapband surgery was not something I entered into lightly and it was very important to me that I have a highly qualified doctor. With that in mind, I attended a seminar and was very impressed with his professionalism. During the consult, Dr. Spivak was very helpful, answering my questions in a positive way. I felt very confident in his expertise and signed up for the lapband surgery. It was the best decision I could have made. I have nothing but praise to say about Dr. Spivak and his staff. The surgery went smoothly. I didn't have any problems from the surgery and was able to go back to work after a few days. Another reason I chose him is that his practice also included support meetings that I could attend. I attended the support group meetings for 10 months and can't imagine going through this journey without those meetings. I've have two fills since my surgery a year ago and each time Dr. Spivak has answered my questions thoroughly before he completed the fills. I would highly recommend him to anyone (and have).

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was he was very knowledgeable of bariatric surgery and has a care for his patients for the procedure to work for them. Over time my confidence in him as my aftercare physician has only grown stronger. His office staff ( Bea, Rachel and Brenda) to just mention a few as there are others are all wonderful and professional and care about you as a patient and your journey to weightloss. I cannot say there is anything I dislike about Dr. Spivak or his office staff, only positive things in my experience. Dr. Spivak is a qualified bariatric surgeon and offers great aftercare to his patients. He strongly recommends aftercare and follow-ups regularly. Dr. Spivak requires a seminar and consultation of all patients before surgery and is very informative of all risk with both lap-band and by-pass surgery. In my opinion Dr. Spivak is the best qualified bariatric surgeon in the Houston, Texas area and I highly recommened him to all new people looking into bariatric surgery. Dr. Spivaks surgical competence as well as his bedside manner are wonderful.

My experience with Dr Spivak has been a great experience for me from the very beginning. Dr. Spivak and his staff have been very helpful and supportive of me and my weight loss goal. I have also enjoyed attending his support group that is held every other Tuesday night. I have learned alot about myself and my weight loss journey. I would highly recommend Dr. Spivak and his office to anyone that is thinking about the Lapband surgery for weight loss.

I had my surgery on 11-20-06 with Dr. Hadar Spivak in Houston, TX. The surgery is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Dr. Spivak and his staff made me and my family feel secure in my decision for weight loss surgery and I would recomend him to anyone wishing to make this wonderful, life-altering journey. I lost almost 100 pounds in a little over a year. With the lapband, I was able to get pregnant and have a beautiful healthy baby. Now I can be an active and loving mommy. My husband and I are grateful for this miracle, one that wasn't possible without the weight loss. Dr. Spivak has been supportive every step of the way and I wouldn't dream of using another Doctor.

Dr. Spivak was my first choice as my doctor for my weight loss surgery. His attitude toward his patients is undescribeable. He takes the time to explain all aspects of the process in the weight loss surgery. His staff is very helpful, reliable and have great attitudes. Even though I have not had the oppourtunity to use the after care program everything I have read or heard about the program is magnificent. On the day of surgery Dr. Spicak took the time to explain all again and ask if you have any questions or concerns. I would refer any one out there thinking about weight loss surgery to take the time to attend the seminar and speak to Dr. Spivak. You will not be sorry.

He was very confident and optimistic and informative. Both he and his staff are upbeat and encouraging. I rate him excellent overall. I would say both his surgical competence and bedside manner are very good. Many of the nurses in the hospital were patients as well and all of them said Dr. Spivak was absolutely the best surgeon.

Living in the Houston area, I consider myself very fortunate to have so many options for outstanding medical care. I researched many options and many physicians in the Houston area when considering what to do about attacking my life-long struggle with obesity. When I found Dr. Spivak's website, I spent hours. Upon attending the seminar with my husband, I knew that I had found the surgeon who would change my life. Obesity is an epidemic in my family, and when I saw the trend continuing in one of my own children, I knew it was my duty to stop it once and for all; my parents had fad-dieted and taken me on that roller coaster with them since I was 8 years old, and my metabolism and body was a war zone. He looked past all that, and reached out to help. Dr. Spivak immediately struck me as candid, compassionate, and completely competent. He also struck a chord with my skeptical husband, who entered completely dead-set against the procedure. After dealing with the office staff and personnel at the seminar and meeting with Dr. Spivak, who was so patient and caring during our consultation in answering questions, my husband was also thoroughly convinced that Dr. Spivak was the answer to my prayers. The surgery, after-care, support group....EVERYTHING has been first class. I would not recommend anyone else!!rnrnIt's been almost one year this week, and I am down about 120 lbs and am looking forward to a tummy tuck and the rest of my life! God bless Dr. Spivak!

When I first met Dr. Spivak I was impressed with his soft spokeness and the genuineness that he exhibited. All of this about him remains 2 years after by bypass surgery. I am proned to infections, and when I told Dr. Spivak this and that he would most definitely need to start me on antibiotics immediately, unlike other doctors, he did not dismiss me and my concerns. He simply told the nurse anesthesist to do as I asked because I knew myself.rnrnFour months post surgery I experienced a problem and was rushed to the hospital. When Dr. Spivak received the call, he immediately told my husband to get me to the hospital and he would meet us there. He did not say \"I'm not on call, and I will have another doctor see you\". Dr. Spivak himself met us at the ER. I was hospitalized for a couple of days, but Dr. Spivak was in everyday talking to my husband and re-assuring me that I was fine. The most impressive thing yet is when he dismissed me from the hospital, he gave me and my husband his personal cell number and told us to call him if anything else came up. My husband was just blown away!rnrnA year later, I was involved in a car accident where I struck my head on the dash. The ER gave me a couple of shots that sent me immediately into \"dumping\". My husband called Dr. Spivak's personal cell, and it was the same number, and Dr. Spivak explained things to my husband - and we were just fine!rnrnJust think his cell number was still the same a year later!rnrnI love Dr. Spivak and have recommended him to other friends that wanted either the lap band procedure or gastric bypass. Dr. Spivak is truly \"the man\".

Spivak is VERY professional and up front. I felt that way from the moment I met him, through the surgery and into the after-care phase.rnrnThe office staff is friendly, professional, and accomodating.rnrnThis doctor is well respected by other health professionals who I understand also choose him for thier own surgeries because he has such a good reputation.rnrnHe is upfront and honest about the risks of surgery and his aftercare instructions are easy to understand and available online.rnrnI would give him a 10 plus on everything. I made a very good choice in going with Spivak. One of the best I've ever made.rnrnJust an aside, he is very nice in addition to being competent, fast, and generally amazing!

Dr. Spivak is a wonderful doctor! From the begining he explained every step of my surgery and has been there throughout my weightloss journey. I reached my goal weight one year after surgery and I am able to maintain a healthy weight of 125lbs. I would not be where I am today without this life saving surgery! Dr. Spivak and his office have always been there to answer all the million questions I have had and Dr. Spivak is always smiling and glad to see me even when it's been 3 years since my last visit! I want all future patients to know what a wonderful doctor Dr. Spivak is and his staff is awesome! No other doctor can compare!

I have always been a heavy girl and surgery was the next best option for me after all of the diets that I had tried in my lifetime. I finally made a decision to get the lap-band surgery. Making that decision was easy, but finding a great doctor with a well knowledge, tremendous experience and a warm and caring staff was one that I knew would be a difficult task. After conducting many searches and going to about 4 different seminars, I came to Dr. Spivak's Orientation. I knew instantly that this was the Doctor who I could trust with my body and that he would be the best to help me in achieving my goals to weight loss. Dr. Spivak is the most knowledgable Doctor. He has all of his facts in complete order, and was completely unbiased. He explained to us the pro's and the con's of the surgery in great detail. He even had personalized sessions with all of the people who attended orientation to evaluate our body types and answer any questions that we may have. My impression of Dr. Spivak has only gotten better even post surgery. He always answers any questions that I may have and makes me feel extremely comfortable at every visit. Between visits, his staff is more than friendly and resourceful in answering any questions that I may have. Not only does Dr. Spivak know what he is doing pre surgery but he also have a very structured post surgery program for all of his patients. I recommend Dr. Spivak to all of my family and friends who are looking into the surgery, because with Dr. Spivak, I know that they are in good hands, just like I am!

Dr. Spivak and his staff are extremely friendly and have consistantly provided excellent care. Dr. Spivak takes time with his patients and was always available to make sure all my questions were answered prior to my surgery and even afterwards as well. I encourage everyone to visit with Dr. Spivak, he is extremely approchable and very professional. The staff is every encouraging both before the surgery and during the aftercare program. There is no other weight loss Dr. I would reccomend more than Dr. Spivak. I have been very successful with his program.

I knew Dr. Spivak would be great for me from the first meeting. He was very knowledgeable and personable. I came to Dr. Spivak after my previous surgeon retired and was very happy with his services. His office staff is very friendly and helpful. When you call the office to make an appointment or ask a question, they are very helpful. I would reccomend him to anyone looking for a bariatric surgeon because he is very smart and friendly.

My first impression of Dr Spivak was that he was very knowledgeable and capable in performing weight loss surgeries. My impression over time is just gotten better. His patient care during the surgery and in the past almost 3 years since my surgery has been amazing. His office staff is great, and are so helpful and knowledgeable with any concerns I have had. I really did not have any dislikes when it came to Dr. Spivak, and very much highly recommend him for people considering weight loss surgery. rnAftercare is very important to Dr. Spivak, and he stresses that after surgery and with follow ups afterwards. His office does have a structured aftercare program that is a group of banded patients that come together to help one another. He definately addressed the risks and options regarding weightloss surgeries, and answered all questions and made me know that the lap band was best for me. I would rate him overall as VERY excellent in all aspects of patient care. I came in weighing about 259 and at my height of 5'6\" and 1/2, I was considered obese. And, now 2 and 1/2 years later I am much healthier and currently weighing about 175 lbs. So, I am just thrilled with my results and my choice to be banded by Dr. Spivak.

I was never rushed. rnThe staff were also so helpful in helping get through this life changing experience. rnMy surgery was over 6 years ago and to this day they have always been there when i needed them or had any questions.rnOverall, I rate Dr. Spivak and staff number 1.rnBedside manner and surgical competence are both important and you can have both with Dr. Spivak and his team!

From the first time I heard Dr. Spivak speak at an information seminar, I was impressed by his calm, confident demeanor and presentation of the scientific research. I've remained impressed by his manner through the past three+ years. His office staff is always courteous. I know that Dr. Spivak has a structured aftercare program, including a support group, which I have attended once, but due to the distance I now live from the office, I don't participate on a regular basis. I felt well informed about the risks of surgery, possibilities of complications, etc. Overall, I think Dr. Spivak is one of, if not the best, doctors in the country for the lap-band procedure. Both his surgical competence and bedside manner are excellent. After three years, I have lost 110 pounds and am continuing to lose on a very slow but steady basis. I am glad for the slowness - it has given me time to get used to my body as it changed, without it changing too much all at once, which has freaked me out in the past before. I would have this procedure again in a heartbeat, and when asked about the procedure, I always refer the person to Dr. Spivak.

When I first met Dr. Spivak, I felt very comfortable with him. He seemed very knowledgeable in the procedures that he spoke about. He answered all questions that I had and he was very thorough and made sure that I understood everything. As time passed and I visited his office, I became even more of of him and his staff. They were always so helpful and caring. Dr. Spivak and his staff stressed how important and pertinent aftercare was. Dr. Spivak advised on support groups that were available both in person and online. He also talked about how diet and exercise would be beneficial and more results would be produced. Prior to surgery, Dr. Spivak sat down and talked with me about the risks of surgery and gave all of the statistical data on patients overall and his patients personally. I have to say that my experience with Dr. Spivak and his staff has been wonderful and I would not have changed a thing. I would do it all over again knowing what I know now. I only wish that I would have known about the surgery years ago. Dr. Spivak's surgical competence and bedside manner is out of this world. He has made my life so much better and I could never find the words to express my gratitude to him.

I attending the seminar in June of 2005 and was immediately cmfortable and confident in Dr. Spivak and his staff. They explained the options for weight loss surgery thoroughly and answered all of my questions. I chose to do the lap band because of the less invasive procedure and the fact that it could be modified if needed, my anatomy wasn't being altered. rnThe recovery from surgery was no more painful than over doing it working out. I took the next day off from work and was back at my desk the next work day. I started loosing weight immediately and reached my initial goal weight within the year, but to my surprise and joy it continued to come off and now I am the same weight and size as I was in high school. I am working out again, because I like to, but it was too painful at 282 pounds. I now weigh between 140 and 145. rnMy health improved faster than the weight sould come off. Prior to surgery I was being treated for the onset of Type 2 diabetes. When I left the hospital after surgery I monitored my glucose levels and to my amazement they never peaked and I no longer need medicine to control it.rnrnI chose to take my weight off slowly and gradually and only adjusted my band when it was necessary, so I was still able to eat with my husband and children without feeling deprived. I used my band as a reminder of when enough was enough.rnrnIf you considering weight loss surgery, visit Dr. Spivak's office and get all the facts. Don't jump in to anything without getting the knowledge you need to benefit from any surgical weight loss program.

Living in a state where there isn't a single bariatric surgeon, making my decision on which surgeon to go with was crucial. I grew up in Houston, Texas and my family was still there so that narrowed down which city I would be traveling to quickly. Upon my intial research I was blown away with just how many lap band surgeons there were in the Houston area alone. I narrowed my choice down to three doctors, but always went back to Dr. Spivak. The other two tried to push me into gastric bypass and I had already made up my mind I did not want to go that route. Dr. Spivak actually talked me through the different procedures and made me feel like together we had made this choice.rnrnDr. Spivak was the first in Texas to do this procedure and had SO many behind his belt, that his experience alone made my choice. rnrnWhen I spoke with him and his office, I was very careful to explain my concerns of living out of state, and what could go wrong living 1000 miles away from my doctor. He and his staff put me at ease and put me in touch with another one of his patients living in my same city. The fact that his patients were nation wide made me even more comfortable with my choice.rnrnGoing into surgery I felt completely prepared for everything, from the procedure to the recovery to living with the band. rnrnOnce I returned home, his office answered all of my \"stupid\" questions, and never made me feel as far away as I was.rnrnIt's been a little over a year and I have lost over 100 pounds. I know that this decision, going ahead with the lap band and Dr. Spivak's care was the BEST decision I have ever made!

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was on the tv when I first learned of the lap bank. I liked his presentation; not flamboyant or overly promising, just a matter of fact, we might be able to help you attitude. My impression of Dr. Spivak has just gotten better after personal contact with him. His office staff is super. Always courteous and knowledgeable. I really don't know anything I would change about Dr. Spivak. I've had more than my fair share of contact with doctors, and I would say he ranks right at the top of the list. I have heard of some complicaitons that can occur with this surgery, and I've not experienced any after effects. I can attribute that to Dr. Spivak's experience and expertise. A lot of emphasis is put on aftercare, and I'm glad. I will live the rest of my life with an appliance on my stomach, and I want to know all I can about what I can do to make that trouble free. All the risks of surgery were explained to me, and, actually, the risks seemed pretty small considering the amazing benefits. As I said, Dr. Spivak is at the top of my doctor list. I give him an A plus. I like all of his attributes, but when it comes to a surgeon I suggest that his expertise with the procedure is probably most important, and I think he nailed that. I also like him personally. He has a very caring and pleasant personality.

Dr. Spivak and his staff made the lap band experience easy and enjoyable. He is very kind and spent time answering my questions. The fact that Dr. Spivak was the first lap band surgeon in Texas gave and was part of the FDA trials was a huge factor in choosing him as my surgeon. His staff was very helpful through the process. When I called with questions someone always got back to me very quickly with the necessary information. Dr. Spivak was very honest about the procedure, results and possible side effects of the surgery. He was very informative. On the morning of surgery he came by and visited to reassure me that everything would be fine. He checked on me again after I woke up and before I left the hospital. With Dr. Spivak you get an experienced surgeon that cares about his patients.

wow, what a wonderful experience. I would do it all over again. Dr. Spivak is so pleasant to talk to. He appears to be very concerned and he is. The band proceedure was easy. I would do it over bypass anyday. To me you can control eating better and with the option to deflate or fill helps you along the way. It is true it only a help method the rest is up to you. If you run into problems Dr. Spivak can help you.

Dr. Spivak is a very caring doctor who understands the needs of his patients. I work in law enforcement and my weight became a major issue. Being on patrol I needed to be in shape for myself and others. I am also a mother with a son who is 4 now and needed to lose the weight to keep up with him. I had my lap-band 3 years ago and my first impression of Dr. Spivak was WOW. He listens to your needs and takes the time to listen to your every concern. He recommends the best procedure to fit your needs. My impression of Dr. Spivak is still the same after three years, he still takes the time to listen and make recomendations. If I ever need anything he and his staff are always a phone call away and a so polite and if they need to get back with me they do so in a timely manner. Aftercare after the lap-band is so important and is emphasized by Dr. Spivak. The lap-band is a life changing procedure and takes self-control and the wanting to lose weight. If you follow the instructions and adjust to the changes you will do well and it is well worth it. If I had to make the decision I would do it all over again if I had to and would recommend the procedure to anyone who needed it. It has dramatically changed my life and I wouldn't chose another doctor. It has helped me medically, physically, emotionally and I have better self-esteem and self-confidence. I give Dr. Spivak a ten and his staff as well.

Very compassionate, caring Doctor. HelLet me make the decisions as to what surgery was best for me after giving me all the information then supported me 110% to get the best results after I made my decision.rnrnHis staff made me feel I could call at anytime with questions and no question was unimportant.rnrnThe surgery center (Park Plaza) went well beyond my expectations in care. I received superb care and attention.rnrnThe surgery has changed the way I feel about myself and the way I feel about everything I do. I would advise anyone else contemplating the decision to do what I did but only if they are doing it for themselves - not for what other want them to do.

Dr. Spivak has made my weight loss experience one of the most incredible times of my life. He has been so very caring and available to answer any questions that I may have. I had a gastric bypass procedure done and in the last 4 months have lost 56 lbs. This was something that I would never have accomplished on my own.rnrnBefore the surgery Dr. Spivak gave a very indepth seminar on the procedure and then met with each person one on one. When the decision was made to do gastric bypass, he spent a good amount of time preparing me for what I would face. Dr. Spivak, his staff and the hospital were everything I would want for this life changing event.rnrn

I found Dr. Spivak and his staff to be very friendly and supportive in my journey to successful weight loss. I chose Dr. Spivak after attending several seminars with different doctors. I found him to be the best fit for me! His staff is always friendly when I come in for my fills and unlike most offices he is often available to do my fills when I come in. He is cautious when doing fills as he does not want his patients to suffer complications from being too tight. If I had to do this again I would chose Dr. Spivak without any hesitation!

I had a good friend who had the lapband surgery. She encouraged me to have it done as well, in spite of the fact that she wasn't that happy with her Dr. She did well in her weight loss effort. I decided that it might be the answer for me, but did not want to go to her Dr., so I began to do some research. At the same time, I went to see my female Dr. I asked what she thought about me having lap band surgery. She told me that in two days, she herself was having this procedure done. I asked her who she chose, and why. She had done much research, and as a physician, she had decided she wanted Dr. Spivak to do her surgery. I had heard good things about him myself, and with her vote of confidence, I was convinced he was the Dr. I wanted. I came to his office one evening for a consultation, and a group meeting. I was very impressed with the entire staff. I was very impressed with Dr. Spivak, and he seemed to really care. I felt that he would take good care of me after, as well as before, the surgery. This has been true. Dr. Spivak has been caring and his staff has been excellent.

Dr. Spivak is a caring physcian. In picking a doctor to perform my surgery I was very interested in the aftercare and help in adjusting to the lapband. Dr. Spivak and his staff have all gone above and beyond. They answer every question and always make time to make sure I understand everything. My visits to his office for fills are always handled efficiently and I never feel like a number. The care I received and continue to receive years later make me know I picked the best surgeon for this life changing surgery!

I had my surgery in Nov 2007 and I have lost 40 pounds to date. I have dropped 4 clothes sizes and I feel terrific. My goal is to lose 100 lbs by my next birthday in April 09. I have gotten off of my blood pressure meds and all of my diabetes meds. I have 3 sisiters who have all done this also and we work as a team to lose all our weight because you have to have a support group to succeed in my opinion. Dr. Spivak has been great and I really appreciate his candidness because it puts my in perspective of what my goal is. I would recommend this surgery to anyone who is on alot of meds or not but just to feel better and hopefully live a longer life is enough for me. rnrnRegards and Good Luck Lisa

Dr. Spivak saved my life. I connected with him on our first meeting and then took my time deciding whether to have the Lap- band surgery. When I did decide to have the surgery i could have gone to Denver but instead came back to Dr. Spivak. He made me feel great about my decision and assured me that it would be a great thing for me. Little did he know he was tranforming my life. I would not have changed this decision for anything. His staff is always friendly, he is genuine in his efforts to help people and I am still glad to have had Lap- Band surgery. His team has the whole package: knowledge, care giving and a clear understanding of what someone with weight issues goes through. Thank God for all of them. I would recommend he and his staff to anyone thinking about this procedure.

I chose Dr. Spivak almost without meeting him. I know several people who have used him for their surgeries and they were VERY complimentary of both his bedside manner and skills. Once I researched him and went to the introduction seminar I knew he was the surgeon for me. He has done the LapBand procedure thousands of times and has even participated in clinical trials. He is the leading LapBand surgeon in Texas so I knew he was right for me. In addition, his staff is extremely helpful and always answers all of my questions. rnrnHis introductory seminar answered all of my questions. He also had actual patients there to tell about their journey of weight loss. It was extremely helpful and wonderful to talk to others who had gone through it.rnrnI am now three months into this journey and have lost 45 pounds. It hasn't always been easy but it is DEFINITELY worth it. I would, without hesitation, recommend Dr. Spivak. He has both bedside manner and surgical compentency. I believe it is very rare to find both qualities in a surgeon and am glad to have found him.

Dr. Spivak was a very welcoming surgeon. Having been my first surgery ever this was a very supportive feel. I had played around with the idea of the lapband but once I met with Dr. S he said I was a prime candidate for the by-pass. He talked with me and answered all my questions and his staff was extremely helpful as well. I went for it and can't be any happier. The surgery was a definate success. I can't tell anyone else they must do this but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. rnrnI want everyone to know that this decision was so easy for me once I met with Dr. S. My surgery was on June 16 and have already lost 78 lbs in just 3 months.

I had my surgery 2 years ago and have lost about 50 pounds and kept it off. Dr Spivak has been so understanding from the beginning. My beginning was different. I postphoned \"chickened out\" 4 times before I finally went through with the surgery. When I talked to Dr Spivak about my fear and appologized for all the cancellations. He said we only do it if you are ready. It's really OK he said. The staff also was understanding and forgiving. I picked Dr Spivak because I felt he and his staff were so professional and coming from a medical profession myself ( I'm an RN) that was most important to me. It is a new way of life and I'm still learning, I would encourage anyone and everyone with a weight problem to go to Dr Spivak.

I had considered lap band surgery for several years, had researched online...etc.rnI was impressed with Dr Spivak's record of success...the fact that he was the first in Texas to do lap band, and, that the FDA chose him for clinical approval of the process.rnI attended on of his seminars and was blown away by his and the office staff's treatment of all of us. We were people with needs, not just a number with a dollar sign beside it.rnrnI had the band surgery on Feb 1, 2008. It is the best thing that I have ever done for myself. I have had no problems, and am totally satisfied, not hungry even eating small amounts. My band adjustments have been accurately done, and it is working for/with me.rnrn Dr.Spivak's office staff have been wonderful to me, and , when I go in for a fill, he actually listens to me and visits.rnrnI would recommend him to anyone considering the surgery....my life will never be the same.rnrnSince Feb 1, 2008 I have lost 80 lbs!!!! It has been so easy ,and best of all, I can keep it off this time!!!!

Aftercare was emphasized and follow up was done immediately following the surgery.rnrnSurgical competence and bedside manner were both great.rnrnI would recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone wanting a competent surgeon with a great bedside manner and friendly and knowledgeable staff.

I choose Dr.Spivak, because my mother had the lap band back in 2000 and after meeting him, his bed side was wonderful and I felt he took great care of all his patients. I choose to have gastric bypass after my husband came home from a tour of duty with the military and I had gained even more wieght. When I came in for my first appointment his staff was great! They answered all my questions, from understanding the surgery, eating, dealing with the insurance company to what I could expect after surgery. The day of surgery, yes I was nervous, but I was completely comfortable, with Dr. Spivak and the surgery. Day of surgery I weighed in at 247lbs. today nearly 3 years later, I've been able to maintain my weight at 125lbs. I'm very happy with the surgery and would recommend it to anyone but only if they had Dr. Spivak as their surgeon. He has a great staff, that can answer all your questions. I would recommend Dr. Spivak to all my friends and family, after everything he and his staff has done for me, they've changed my life for the better. I no longer have all the problems I had before surgery, like high blood pressure, joint pains, back pain, borderline diabetes, sleep problems, painful pms and emotional problems. Now, I feel great, I feel better about myself, and no longer have any of the health problems I had before. So if your looking into this surgery, I would come meet Dr. Spivak and his staff, he's a great doctor and I'm sure you'll agree that he's the best doctor for this surgery!

I would like to thank you for all that you have done. You were very warm and compassionate during every office visit. Your staff was wonderful! I feel that surgical competence is very important. However, great bedside manners, are also very important, especially during the aftercare process, any you have BOTH! You were very detailed during my consultatin, prior to my surgery, and after my surgery. You stressed the importance of aftercare, as well as addressing all my questions and concerns. You made me feel like you \"personally\" knew me. My surgery was a success! I have received tremendous results! I feel you are and excellent surgeon! Thanks again for all that you have done.

I checked and around and read many reviews and various doctors. I wanted Dr Spivak but went to the seminar with Dr spiegel because that was the one my insurance would approve. After meeting both doctors and the staff I chose to go with Dr. Spivak and self pay. The reviews on Dr Spivak were exceptional and now I know why. He makes you feel very comfortable from the moment you meet him and lets you know exactly what to expect so you wont be disappointed. My surgery went well it has only been 2 1/2 months I have lost about 12 pounds and the scares are hardly noticable. His bed side manner is great very caring. He does not rush you through his appt he sat and talked to my mother and I for almost 45 minutes my first visit. I would highly reccomend Dr Spivak to anyone who is looking to have surgery. You wont be disappointed if you choose Dr Spivak. I hope this helps good luck to you all.

I researched the lap band for about 6 months and the same for surgeons. Dr. Spivak's background was most impressive to me. I found it comforting knowing he had done this procedure thousands of times. I drove 8 hours to meet Dr. Spivak during a seminar. He has a calmness about him which made me more at ease. My questions were answered and I felt confident that I had made the right decision to proceed with my surgery. I left knowing that I had chosen the right doctor. My pre-op and surgery went well. My first 24 hours post-op were a little rough but I got through it. I didn't get a chance to participate in the aftercare program living 8 hours away. But I was given all the information I needed about eating, exercise and rules for taking care of the band and making it work for me. The ladies in the office are great. They were all pretty much able to answer questions that I had between visits. My surgery was in May, 06. I just saw Dr. Spivak today and am 8 lbs from my goal. My experience has been wonderful and I'm so thankful I did this for me! I want to keep my band FOREVER. I will continue driving my 8 hours for my band cks and fills. That's how GREAT Dr. Spivak and his staff are. I would recommend him to anyone. rnrnrn

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he was very knowledgable and friendly. My impression of him has stayed the same ever since. The office staff is very helpful and patient. Future patients should know that they are in good hands and that they can feel confident in reaching their goals. Aftercare is highly emphasized. Overall, I would rate Dr. Spivak as an excellent surgeon with great surgical competence and bedside manner. My life has changed for the better since the surgery and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I chose Dr. Spivak as my bariatric surgeon for a # of reasons. 1) I have a cousin who’s a physician in the Houston area. She’s never heard one negative thing said about Dr. Spivak. 2) My cousin has a physician friend who’s had lap band surgery done by Dr. Spivak. She was extremely pleased with the results. 3) He as a good record with the Texas Medical Board. 4) He’s experienced at performing the laparoscopic gastric bypass. 5) The required pre-op seminar was very educational. My family and I were impressed with Dr. Spivak and his staff. 6) Dr. Spivak didn’t try to “sell” surgery to me. I got a straight story on what to expect.rnrnMy surgery was a success, and I had no complications. Dr. Spivak did a fabulous job. He has a very helpful and respectful bedside manner. My hospital and post-operative visits with him have been informative and reassuring. My family and I have been very happy with our experience with Dr. Spivak. His office staff have been extremely helpful and patient with me both before and after surgery.rnrnSince I don’t live in the Houston area, I don’t know much about his aftercare program. In addition to my post-op visits with Dr. Spivak, I rely on my family physician, my dietician, a local support group for bariatric surgery patients, and my family and friends for additional support.

I had surgery 7 weeks ago and I have lost 44 pounds. I am thrilled. My friends and co-workers are starting to notice. I feel better than I have felt in 20 years. I am 40 years old and feel like I am in my 20's. I have had no problems. I am now able to eat most everything that I feed my family or at restaurants. I just eat a much smaller portion but still feel very satisfied. I have not been hungry just very content with the whole experience. Dr. Spivak and his staff have taken very good care of me through the whole process. Dr. Spivak was very straightforward with me from the beginning and helped prepare me in everyway. His bedside manner was fantastic and I felt like I was his only patient. This was true in the office as well as in the hospital. If given the chance to decide whether I would do it again, I definitely would. Dr. Spivak is an excellent surgeon with a great bedside manner and I think both are very important.

Dr. Spivak is very nice and has a great bedside manner. I have to say that I am not very happy with my progress, and I am doing exactly as directed and excercising twice as much as they told me to. I feel as if he is always rushed when I go in to the office and doesn't really have time to fully go over things with me and figure out why I am not seeing the proper progress.

I had gastric bypass surgery on July 7,2008 due to obesity and type 2 diabetes illness. My surgeon was Hadar Spivak and I am very satisfied with him and his team with the efforts that they put forth to save my life and show me a way to a new life. Other than a couple extra days in the hospital and a little discomfort from surgery I feel that I did the best thing I could in having this procedure. After 8 weeks I have lost over 50 lbs and feel 100% better. My diabetes has been cut in half. Knowing what I know now I would do this again without hesitation.

Dr. Hadar Spivak has provided me with excellent pre op, op and pos-op care. I cannot say enough good things about him. Their office staff is always courteous and professional. Appointments run on time and I have always been provided with through answers to any questions or concerns. Dr. Spivak is one of the finest weight loss surgeons in the country and by far has the best reputation in the State of Texas. My overall experience has been nothing but the best. In addition to his record as a physician and surgeon, he is to be commended for going the extra mile by offering a range of voluntary aftercare programs at no extra cost to the patient. I would encourage anyone contemplating the lab band surgery to attend one of his free seminars to gather the most up to date information regarding the surgery whether or not they choose him as their surgeon. He and his staff are always happy to serve and to provide the best of care.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was a postive one. I knew when i first met him, he was willing to help me. He understood the pain and heartache I was going through because of my weight problem. He was so understanding and was more then happy to answer any questions and concerns that arised. He addressed every risk of surgery, not to scare me, but to inform me. The aftercare program is very structured. I enjoyed the message board that was avaliable because you were able to talk to people that were also experiencing the same thing. I would never recommend anyone but Dr. Spivak for weight loss surgery, overall I think he is number one.

I have the best Lap-Band doctor in the world, Dr. Hadar Spivak. Dr. Spivak provides the perfect combination of caring treatment and professional medicine. Before I got the Lap-Band, I had consultations with both Dr. Spivak and Dr. Speigle. Although both seemed very capable, there was something about Dr. Spivak that made me know he was the right one. Every aspect of his doctor/patient relationship has been a wonderful experience for me. This includes relating to him as a person and also all those in his office. The doctor who delivered my daughter was great but her office staff was terrible. Dr. Spivak’s office staff is professional, kind, and understanding. I never hesitate to call and talk with them about anything. rnrnWith Dr. Spivak, I have lost 95 pounds and no longer have to take my high blood pressure medicine or my diabetes medicine. I am able to be much more active and participate fully in the joy of raising my 4 year old!rnrnI think it takes a very special person to effectively treat the physical and emotional issues of bariatric patients. Dr. Spivak is very, very special.rnrnTonya Kenedarn

I had my surgey 4 years ago. I came to see Dr.Spivak recently, and he and his staff was the same great people as they were from the beginning. They answered all of my questions and concerns, told me about the Wellness Program and since I live out of state gave me the directors card and said they have a Yahoo Communication group to help those that can not come to the program regularly or live out too far which was awesome. I lost 90 pounds with my lap-Band and I am so glad. I have struggled with my weight all of my life because food is my addiction. My only regret is I wish I would have gotten the Lap-Band earlier in my life.

And the support group is great to. I am so blessed to have found such a great place to go rnfor my surgery. And the support after your surgery is so great to. I was banded on April 3rd. I have lost 63 pounds to date. The support group is great to. It will help you with everything on questions and also to have that support that you need. I consider everyone there a friend. Stacey

2005-Lap-banded

As some of you may know I am the Director of Dr.Spivaks Wellness Program held every First and Third Tuesdays there at his office. I just wanted to give you an update and invite all of you who has never been to the program to please come out and let our newly banded family hear your stories. OR, if you have had the lap band and are at a plateau, come out and let our encouragement and knowledge help you get back on track. We have had lots of people who have lad the surgery in the past and was at a stand still, they came to the meeting once and are now losing weight again, we see them at every meeting now.I am so proud of ALL of our attendees!!rnrn I too, am one of Dr.Spivaks many satisfied patients as well. What made me choose Dr.Spivak out of the other 4 doctors I visited (since I was cash pay)?? His experience, his kind heart, the ability to make you feel at ease and one of the most important things ...hope... he gave me hope...something that none of the other doctors gave me. I was at the lowest point of my life at 330 pounds and in extremely poor health. With the creators of the lap band, Dr.Spivak and my hard work and determination, I have lost a total of 165 pounds. I have went from a very unhealthy size 28 to a very strong healthy size 6. No, I am not skinny or thin, my bone structure will not allow this and plus everyone is different, but I am extremely happy with my results in losing 11 sizes!! rnrnI have not had any complications with my band. I have been very compliant with the rules Dr. Spivak has put for everyone.I feel since he was the first doctor in Texas to preform the band and has basicly trained all the other doctors, what better doctor to go to, as well as his knowledge is MY power to succeed! rnrnSince my weight loss, I have had so many opportunitiespass my way.I went to the greatest Plastic Surgeon in Houston, Dr.Lior Heller, I had a breast lift and augmentation as well as a small tummy tuck. I have been on the TV Show called Modern Beauty, I have made a commercial for On-Q. And I am part of one of the largest modeling companies, this is just to mention a few.The life I have now, was not even in my wildest of dreams. It has helped my self esteme and self confidence.rnrn Now, my goal is share my story, to let people know there is \"Hope\", there is a way out and it does work. To educate about obesity and the underlying causes, its effects on us mentally, physically and emotionally as well as its effects on our loved ones. There are so many people out there so quick to judge someone on their size and looks, with out even knowing the \"cause\". In my case, I was robbed and beaten for 12.00,I had 2 back surgeries and a knee surgery, this 3 1/2 year ordeal made the weight pack on. But to other I was lazy, they would say \"Just push away from the table\", well, that did not do anything but make the depression worse.rnrnIn closing, I would just like to state, Dr.Spivak, his entire office staff, the Wellness Program is a great combination. I wish every one the very best of success and I hope to meet you all at the Wellness Program. rnrn'WE ALL WALK WITH THE BAND FOR A NEW QUALITY OF LIFE\"rnrnSincerely,rnWanda ChasernBanded:5.19.2005 at 330 poundsrnTotal Weight Loss: 165

Dr. Spivak is very professional and seems to care a great deal in finding the best way to help his patients. After my surgery though, I have not seen him, only his staff. I love his staff though. Very caring and willing to take the time to answer any questions. When I had my surgery, Dr. Spivak did not have a great aftercare program. Since then it looks like he has put a little more focus on that which makes me wish I had waited just a little longer before getting the surgery. I can recommend Dr. Spivak but I would strongly encourage anyone to really look at the aftercare of any doctor since really that is the most important aspect of the surgery. Anyone can put a lapband in...it's the follow up that will either make you successful or not.

First things first....my procedure was a laparascopic gastric bypass (not a lap band at all), and when it comes to competency and bedside manner, I happen to be very picky about who I put my trust within. rnHaving been a nurse for 10 years now, I put my trust into Dr. Spivak. His manner is very \"laid back\" and friendly. He is a very confident surgeon, and for very good reasons since he has studied at Mt. Sinai, among others. rnIn my experience, my gastric bypass was performed on Jan. 9, 2008. Although I was quite uncomfortable being the \"patient\" and not the \"nurse\", I showed up at the hospital, and actually didn't have a very eventful beginning. It was my experience post-op that is very important to understand.rnYou should expect to see several \"holes\" from using the camera that are on your stomach that have been sutured or sewn closed. I personally(and not everyone does), had problems with a hole that is actually left open on my left side that was approx. 2-3 inches wide and packed full of gauze. I had a lot of additional pain at this site because almost all of your movements that involve your arm, involves this large muscle that is still healing. i.e. pulling yourself up to walk, to move in the bed, taking in large breaths, etc... On about day 2, you will have the guaze taken out with another dressing applied. You will continue this until it closes within the next couple of weeks. Thinking that this \"hole\" would be an infection risk caused me concern, but be advised that this is actually oposite. This leaves a \"way out\" for infections, instead of closing them in. I never once had an infection, but I do caution you about the \"hole\", because I wasn't aware of it and wished that I was more prepared. Again, Dr. Spivak has a \"method\" that shows me something different and improved among the normal approach to this.rnThe other thing that you should be aware of is that you will not have the traditional PCA (pain) pump with pain medicine. Some medicine is ordered in your IV, but you are at your responsibility to prompt your nurse to give it to you or they may not think that you are needing it. There is more pain medicine, but you should also be aware that it comes in \"shot\" form and it will take approx. 30 min. or so before you start getting relief. There again, anticipate what you will need for pain, because it's effectiveness will not be immediate. Again, not knowing that Dr. Spivak had this method to prevent problems concerning narcotics, I felt unprepared and many times I was in more pain than I felt necessary. Knowing these things would've helped so much more.rnI know this is extremely detailed, but this is for your benefit if you are thinking about a gastric bypass with Dr. Spivak. His competency and method is very strong. I had difficulties within the hospital facility and healthcare, but I feel that this is not a common thing. Perhaps I was one that \"fell beneath the cracks\". Knowing then what I know now would've been a great benefit.rnKnowing that a surgeon who is great atrnwhat he does is important, I strongly suggest that Dr. Spivak is the surgeon you want to strongly consider for yourself.

I felt that Dr. Spivak was a great doctor with a wonderful reputation in the Houston area. He had done the Lap-Band procedure on my aunt and also gastric bypass on a close friend. They both raved about him. When the time came to pick a surgeon, it seems like a no-brainer to pick him. He is very informative, very personable, not one to rush you out the door. He made me feel very comfortable from the minute I met him and I had no doubts that he was the person I wanted to do this operation. His seminar was very informative and he doesn't make promises that he can't keep. He is real with you regarding your weight loss potential and pulls no punches when telling you that he thinks you won't lose enough weight with the chosen procedure (in my case). After seeing that I was set on Lap-Band vs. Gastric, though, he supported that decision and moved forward. rnrnThe only complaint I have is that, on my surgery day, no one went out to tell my family that everything had gone o.k. and that I was in recovery. They waited for almost 4 hours before asking someone to come check on me and, at that point, I was already awake in recovery. I am sure this was not intentional and an oversight that happens rarely, but my family didn't take well to being left in the dark about my progress.

I absolutely love Dr. Spivak. He is very straight-forward which I love. So am I. The office staff has been consistently great. They are just as great now as they were back in 04. I do wish that I would have been told what my eating restrictions were for the night before surgery. I just happened to call and ask before I was about to treat myself to a big steak.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak, was that he's a very personalable person. He paid alot of attention to me. He answered everyone of my questions. He always had a smile on his face and never seemed to be rushed and/or had no time for me. Even in the hospital, he was in my room several times per day and always had that same smile and never left my bedside without going over things I should know. I'd rate him the highest of the scale of surgeons.

I'd recommend Dr. Hadar Spivak,M.D., to anyone that's considering this step.

Dr. Spivak is one of a kind. I felt comfortable with him the moment we met. He has great bedside manners and is very informative. No question is too silly for him...he makes you feel like you are his only patient. I studied numerous surgeons and found him to be the best. My impression of him stayed the same...I was impressed with everything about him. He allowed my husband to ask numerous questions and Dr. Spivak answered them in full detail. He gave us the pros and cons to both the RNY and Lap-Band. His office staff is wonderful also. His office called me every day for the first 4 days after surgery to check up on me. I love Dr. Spivak and his staff...they made and continue to make my experience so much easier. Thank you so much!!

Dr. Spivak provided a great informational session and has a terrific bedside manner. His staff is very efficient and helpful. The only negative to date is limited aftercare programs. He does not offer formal nutritional or psychological programs for his patients. He provides referrals to professionals that I do not feel have gastric bypass experiences.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he exuded self confidence in himself and his abilities. This combined with his empathy for the obese, direct answers and availability were the reasons I chose him. I have not been disappointed yet!rnI am only 1 week a day post-op. I will add more later.

Wonderful caring doctor. Great bedside manner. From day one I felt very comfortable with Dr. Spivak. He answered all of my questions. He and his staff are good. rnI was banded in March '05. Most of his patients were referred to the Houston Area BAndsters Support group, but Just recently I believe he has started a structured aftercare program in his office.

Dr. Hadar Spivak is, undoubtedly, the absolute best bariatric surgeon around. I attended one other Houston area surgeon's seminar and was not impressed. Dr. Spivak presented himself as a very intelligent, experienced, and warm person. Throughout the two plus years since my banding, I have grown even more impressed with both him and his office staff. He is constantly available 24/7 via his answering service and an average wait time for a return call is about 10 minutes TOPS. He is consistent, caring, and extremely approachable.

Dr. Spivak is such a wonderful person. He really understands what I am going through and his office staff has worked so hard to make sure that I have this surgery and that I was in by the end of the year. What a way to RING in the New Year. When I first saw him I was not sure what I wanted...the lap band or the gastric. He talked to me about both of them and told me what he suggested but also told me that I had to make the final decision. That no one knew me better than I knew myself. He takes time to listen and he really took note of my past medical history. Because I had 2 sisters that past away due to Breast Cancer her sent me to Baylor for a consultation. That was very informative. I would rate Dr. Spivak and his staff a \"10\"...please remember that I am scheduled for surgery on 12.28.06.

First impression was great. Went over exactly what the surgery would entail. Staff was very friendly. Had another surgeon at first, but was not willing to work with me on getting insurance approval. I was so impressed with Dr. Spivak. He and his staff took time with me and didn't make me feel like I was being pushed into doing this. It's been almost 6 months since my surgery and I feel wonderful. I have lost about 45 lbs. People always stop me and they can't believe I have lost so much. I just smile and say call Dr. Spivak in Houston. I have three children and thanks to him I will be here for years to watch them mature and maybe see grandkids one day. Thanks, Dr. Spivak. I love ya'll.

Dr. Spivak and his staff are wonderful. No matter how many times I called them, they always seemed to have time for me as if I was their only patient. My first impression of Dr. Spivak was great. First impression was Dr. Spivak is very professional and successful. Over time I became more and more convinced he is one of the top bariactric surgeons in the country. His staffs kind, informative and very helpful. I disliked nothing and Spivak or his staff. Aftercare is everthing it needs to be from them and is structured. Spivak very clearly told me a few times the risk of the surgery. Overall If your considering surgery Dr. Spivak shopuld be at the top of your list. He is very kind andvery experienced. I paid cash and had been saving for it and he even gave me a discount of of his personal fees to help me get the surgery. He really cares!

My first impression of Dr Spivak was that he was soft spoken, but very caring and intelligent. He's a terrific Dr and knows all there is to know about the band. I was impressed with the fact that he does more bands than bypass's and that his speciality and training are in Lap surgery's. In addition everyone in his office is just as caring and helpful as he is. Anytime I call with a question I can get a quick answer-which is so nice.rnrnI can't say enough good things about him, or his practice. He does have several seminars weekly that are free and has also begun seeing paitients after the seminar for the inital consultation. HIs seminar is very throughouh and he makes a point not to steer his paitients towards one proceedure or another, letting them make the choice.rnrnI've heard about a lot of very skilled and wonderful surgeons who are lacking in bedside manner, but he certainly is not the case. He's highly skilled and trainined in both current porcedures as well as the ones not done anymore and his is very warm and caring bedside.rnrnThe only thing lacking that I can think of is that I would benefit from a more structed diet after surgery. Now it may be becuase my insurance is rare in that it requires no counseling, nutiritonal consultations etc, I'm not sure. He does provide a list of foods and at which point you can have them, but I did have to call the office to get a little more guideance myself. Which really isn't a problem, its available, you just have to ask for it.

I can not say enough about Dr Spivak and his team - What a great group of health professionals. rnBecause I was from many miles away, I arrived for my first consultation early and had the opportunity to meet many patients of Dr. Spivak - both the RNY and Lap Band. To me talking to them was the best advertising anyone can do - 100% of them were happy with the surgery and the surgeon! rnrnSince my surgery, the care and concern have been especially good and I am now an advocate here in my hometown for Lap Band procedures.rnrnMany thanks for the caring and courteous services.

I liked Dr. Spivak immediately. Although I knew he had said the same thing a million times to other patients, I did not feel rushed or inconsequential. The pros and and cons of the procedure were clearly explained. I left the initial consultation feeling armed with enough information to make a clear decision.

A few days after surgery I had a question about my blood pressure medicine. I called his answering service and he responded right away. I was impressed!!

The office staff was just as kind and extremely informative. I have called the office with questions and anyone there seems to be trained well enough to be of assistance.

I would certainly recommend Dr. Spivak to others. My experience has been quite favorable.

Wonderful doctor, very caring and great staff. All very friendly. They did all the paper work for me and sent everything in too, was approved within one week! Dr. Spivak has a great bedside manner and and post op care is great. Would recommend him to everyone! He also did my moms lap band surgery and still gives her free adjustments even though she doesn't have any insurance. Isn't a money hungry doctor like some in Houston. Will do what ever is needed to make you happy and healthy.

Nothing negative about Dr. Spivak at all. Wonderful!!! 100%!!!!!

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he is very knowledgable. I was very impressed with his staff and his seminar. I would highly recommend Dr. Spivak to anyone who is interested in a weight loss surgeon.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he is very serious and dedicated to his work. When i attended the seminar I got a really great feel for him. He was very well informed about everything, and very honest about the the risks and outcomes of the surgery. Its not like he was trying to sell something. He has the patients best interst at heart by being very upfront and honest with surgeries. I love the office staff. They are so nice. They made me feel so comfortable and were very easy to talk to. They sat there with me for like 45 minutes answering all my questions. And Some of the girls in the office were bandsters themselves, so they were telling me their expierence and everything. They all give me hugs every time i leave and just alway make the visit a very pleasent one. Now i haven't had that much experience with Dr. Spivak's after care program because I am a relativley new patient, but the after care program sounds great. It sounds like a very structured program and there is always someone there to answer your questions. If you are a self pay the first year of after care is free, and if you loos 50% of your goal then the second year is free. I would rate Dr. Spivak a 10. He seems like a great surgeon. He is one of the houston docotors that trains all the other surgeons to do the surgery, so I am very confident in his surgical competence. I would recomend Dr. Spivak and his team to anyone who is considering WLS. ~Kristyn~

Dr. Spivak is AWESOME! He placed my band almost a year ago, and I just think the world of him:) He is very kind-excellent bedside manner, and I would trust him with my life....although I suppose I did that already:) I flew to Houston from Missouri just for this doctor, and I would do it again--no regrets.

I attended Dr. Spivak's seminar at my PCP, Dr. Pucillo's office. He was very informative and knowledgeable and realistic. He also had people there who had been banded. They talked to us about their experiences.

He is calm, attentive and ready to answer any questions. He has a great bedside manner in addition to being a very good surgeon.

His staff is great and treats everyone with respect. They know what they are talking about and will answer all your questions.

My aftercare is with my PCP, Ronald Pucillo, M.D. at his NRG Wellness Center. He supports the surgery, is trained in Bariatrics in addition to his family practice and has a gym with trainers at his facility. Because I have this support, I did not ask about aftercare with Dr. Spivak.

I think Dr. Spivak is an excellent surgeon and it's a bonus that he has a caring bedside manner. I wouldn't have done this with anyone else. He's the best!

I have been banded for over 2 1/2 years and have lost 160 lbs. Dr. Spivak & his staff have been incredibly supportive, kind & understanding throughout my weight loss journey. I had my Lap-Band surgery on July 1, 2002 and have known Dr. Spivak since before he started doing bariatric surgeries (as a general surgeon). I chose Dr. Spivak initially for his excellent reputation as a gifted general surgeon, able to handle any and all complications a patient might experience. I have never regretted that decision. His after care has been excellent! When I had a complication requiring emergency deflation and surgery, Dr. Spivak and his office staff were there to help me through the ordeal. My band, with Dr. Spivak's help, has allowed me to lose from 329 pounds before surgery to 199 pounds. I have also had a baby last year as a result of the improvement in my health. Dr. Spivak provided clear, written instructions regarding diet and exercise requirements. When I asked for further help, I was promptly provided with expert information for Dr. Spivak's dietician, who is available to all paitents as part of his aftercare program. She was convenient because we talked on the telephone after work hours. Dr. Spivak patiently answers any question I might ask. I am always treated with kindness, compassion and caring by both my surgeon and his staff.
Dr. Spivak stresses the medical literature, to which he has contributed extensively and makes sure every patient understands that a band won't work without aftercare and adjustments. Overall, I would rate Dr. Spivak as "THE BEST." He cured my diabetes, hypertension, infertility and morbid obesity with a 45 minute surgical procedure he has done more than 1000 times. He is a quiet, unassuming man with a bedside manner I consider to be golden. I would highly recommend him to any patient considering either Lap-Band or gastric bypass. He takes excellent care of patients- start to finish!

When I went to Dr. Spivak's obesity seminar I was very impressed with his companssion and ability to communicate what we as patients were thinking about committing ourselves to if we decided to have weight loss surgery. By the time the seminar was complete I was certain that the band was what I wanted and Dr. Spivak was a surgeon that I was confident in using.

At the time my insurance was Cigna and Shirley from his office was honest that it was going to be a fight but that she would try to get it approved. Circumstances allowed me to change carriers and I immediately called Shirley to ask which I should choose and I've had United Healthcare ever since. I was approved within 3 weeks of submitting the paperwork and was at the hospital 2 weeks after that.

I was confident in my decision but did have a small meltdown in pre-op but Dr. Spivak's kindness and confidence calmed me immediately.

I have lost 110 lbs and have had no complications. It's been nearly 3 years and I have had lots of interaction with both Dr. Spivak and his office staff (Brenda, Shirley and Rachael). They have been unfailingly helpful and professional. They are always available to assist with questions and to calm fears. The few times I've needed to get an unfill quickly (like the time I had the stomach flu), I was able to get an appointment immediately.

Due to some non band related health issues I went on a long plateau and everyone in the office made me feel as if they were at my side as cheerleaders, certain that I'd make it to my goal. Now that I am losing again they have the biggest smiles and the most encouragement for me. I feel as if they are family.

I was part of a group of people that started a Houston Bandsters support group and his office is great about making sure that everyone knows that this support is available to them. I've made some wonderful wonderful friends because of that group. Banding has made changes like that in my life that I never expected.

My only regret about the surgery is that it wasn't available to me sooner. I have none about my choice of surgeon and I'd honestly recommend him to anyone who asked me. I count myself lucky that I live in Houston where such a wonderful choice is available to me.

Dr. Spivak is an excellent surgeon who has just the right amount of compassion for me. He answered all of my questions and made me feel completely at ease with his skillset and personality. I particularly like that he has a well documented website that allowed me to research further and prepare for my post - op diet because I feel strongly that this makes me a better informed patient.

I would recommend him to anyone.

It's been over a year now and his staff is just as helpfull now as they were in the begining.

He was awesome! I have never met a doctor who was so interested in his patients and takes the time to answer all questions. His office staff was very friendly. Anytime I have a question about something they are ALWAYS willing to help me out. Aftercare is a big deal for Dr. Spivak. He wants his patients to have the best care that he can provide. The risks of surgery were emphasized numerous times and we talked about all there was involved. He makes sure the choice is yours and does not pressure you either way. You have to attend a class which he conducts before he will even see you and I would recommend that for anyone wanting the surgery. He was great all the way around and I have recommended him to numerous people who all like him as well.

My husband and I went to the seminar hosted by Dr Spivak on April 19th we found it most informative. I really enjoyed hearing Dr Spivak speak. I had already researched the surgery as we had been talking about having it done for a few years.

After the seminar we saw Dr Spivak for our consult. I was pleased by him to say the least. He is WONDERFUL, his consult is information packed. I dont have anything bad to say about Dr Spivak. I look forward to moving ahead and scheduling my surgery. Dr Spivak's office staff is wonderful and everyone goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and welcome. Also, he has a BEAUTIFUL office that is perched up amid the Houston skyline. Its really astonishing how great of a view his office has.

The risks were addressed, Dr S is very precise in his directions. I would give him an A++++. I really like him.

My husband will be having his proceedure with a different doctor (because of some additional concerns) but we are just waiting and ready to go!

I was approved after just 1 letter!

very proffesional, calm, mild mannered, super smart. During his seminar he seemed to favor gastric bypass, which was disappointing, I guess it was more of "He didn't say what I wanted him to say." Which now I realize he was just being realistic. My first visit with him was great, he spent alot of time with me, I never felt rushed, was able to ask all of my questions, I got the feeling that if I would have needed to talk with him for 45minutes, he would have. He gave me a research article after I asked him about some technical q's about the band placement. I am glad he participates in research, this was another big plus. He has also done over 800 bands. At my initial appointment he was doing the surgery at Park Plaza Hospital, I have heard of this one. :-) His staff is very responsive and professional. They kept me informed of the process, mostly anyway, "we'll submit the paper work at this time, you should hear something by this time, etc" They followed up with me when my insurance company called them about something. However, they failed to tell me that I had been approved, my insurance notified them first, I found out a week later. I called his office to tell them and they knew already. I have also heard that his staff sometimes will tell you something and the surgicenter tells you another. This will be frustrating, I know, for me. Dr. Spivak routinely prescribes pain killers post op, and this was important. He also will give you a nausea patch post op. I was also told he gives a local anesthestic at your port placement for more pain relief, the local will wear off but at least It will be one less thing to complain about, initially.

I work in the medical field and have been familiar with Dr. Spivak for years -- I actually worked with him before but had never approached him as a patient. I do know this: Now that I have made the decision to pursue this option, I would not even consider going to another surgeon for this procedure -- his reputation as a surgeon is impeccable. Also, you will not find a doctor that cares more for you as a patient or treats you better as a person.

He is a brilliant doctor with exceptional surgical skills. He is confident and understanding. He is well-published and really understands and has mastered his procedures. I have known him for just over 3 years. He performed a lap-band on me 3 years ago and just recently revised the procedure to the full gatric by-pass laproscopically. My scars were almost invisible last time and are even less this time, even though this time the procedure was much more invasive. His staff is very helpful and caring. They always answer any little question I call with and respond immediately if I am unable to get them on the phone. He went over all the aspects of surgery in detail and is very straight-forward. The best thing about Dr. Spivak is that he is a specialist in the field and has been for a long time. He really knows what he is doing. I met w/four other doctors in Texas before finding him. My mother and aunts met him and liked him, as well.

10/01/04...I have a appt w/Dr. Spivak on 10/14/04, I will let everyone know how it goes, although I've received really good reviews about him, he's very experienced in Lap Surgery, which I really, really like (don't want to be cut open), well, we'll see.

10/13/04...I've decided to go with Dr. Adam Naaman instead of Dr. Spivak, mostly because he's a preferred providor under my insurance, so it's less out of pocket. Yesterday I completed my nutrition and psy eval. and they both gave me an "all clear", but realized I didn't get a letter from my phyisician giving me a "all clear" for surgery. I have a appt to see Dr. Naaman on the 26th to talk about RNY.

1-17-05....Well, I was denied by BCBS, so after talking it over with my hubby, we've decided to go the self pay route with Dr. Spivak, I've heard great things about him, we're hoping I can get it done Feb 23rd, I have an appointment with Dr. Spivak on Jan 31st to talk about the Lapband procedure.

I thought he would be a nerd from his photo. I went to the seminar and felt that he was honest, upfront and actually very funny! The seminar was held at the day surgery clinic and it was extemely clean and well decorated. I was dissappointed that even though the seminar was 12/14, I was unable to get an appointment until 1/6/05. But that gives me time to continue my research and make my list of questions. Plus who wants a surgeon that can see you or answer the phone when you call. YIKES! Good, solid professionals are always in demand. So I wait...

Today I went to see him and rushed to be on time and had to wait almost a full hour after my scheduled appointment before seeing him. However, he did not seem rushed or in any type of hurry. He was very candid about my situation and even advised me in terms of, "If you were my sister,..." which in my opinion means that he genuinely cares for his patients and hasn't forgotten what a huge life changing decision WLS is for the individual. I feel I'm in good competent hands!

He is a very caring person and a wonderful doctor.
No
I really didn't care for the nurses.
Not very kind or friendly people. Did not listen very well. Quick to point out faults.
She did, but after the surgery some questions I had before the surgery the answers change after surgery.
Everyone will make there own judgement. Dr. Spivak is great. I went to two of his seminars. The were very imformative. Dr. Spivak has excellent bedside manner. I seen him before the surgery in his office and before I went in for surgery he came by to make sure I was ok and ready for surgery. Afterward he came by to check on me . He is a very friendly and truly caring doctor. My family doctor had the same surgery I did and he reffered Dr. Spivak. I trust my doctor very much and now I trust Dr. Spivak very much. He makes you feel so comfortable.
What he has can not be taught at any school. I would reffer Dr. Spivak to everyone. I have nothing at all to say bad about him. He also does not beat around the bush about anything he tells you like it is and I really appricate that. I like honesty.

Dr. Spivak was sent from God to provide me with a longer lifespan. From the moment I walked into his office the first day, until today, I have felt his caring spirit for his patients. Dr. Spivak has an excellent bedside manner, and has the uncanny ability to make you feel as if you are important to him. I have suggested him to several friends who are considering having the surgery. Dr. Spivak, thank you so very much for your help in this journey.

I first met Dr. Spivak when we went to the orientation a year ago. Back in Dec 2003 Spivak did my husband's lapband. I was extremely impressed with his knowledge and candor. Some people may be at first meeting taken back since his accent is a little strong. PLEASE do not let this put you off. He is extremely concerned about his patients' health as well as being very experienced.

I met with Dr. Spivak earlier this year for myself. Due to other medical issues we decided the RNY bypass would be a better selection for me than the band. Dr. Spivak's office took care of almost all the paperwork and pre-op work. I was lucky, United Healthcare approved my surgery on the first pass.

After extensive consult with my neurosurgeon I had the RNY and Gallbladder surgery three weeks ago. I will not lie the surgery is extremely painful. But the care I recieved at the hospital was excellent, both by the hospital staff but also by Dr. Spivak. I have full confidence I could not have picked a better surgeon. I have and would recommend him.

Also Rachel, Shirley & Brenda are the best. They are extremely responsive and treat you like a VIP.

I have gone to 2 of Dr. Spivak's seminars, and both times he took the time to personaly speak with anyone that need to ask him questions. He answered all my questions for me and was very caring and has a wonderful smile making you feel at ease. The second time I met him I was even more at ease.
His staff has been very nice and helpful in all questions I have been asking of them. I call everyweek asking about the insurance company, if they have heard from them they know me well now. She is very helpful and caring.
They have aftercare program.
They were honest about the risk of surgery I had looked it up on the computer and he explained the samething.
I have not had surgery yet still waiting for my insurance company to let us know. But I have faith in God and Dr. Spivak.
I know that competence and bedside manners are both very very important. May God be with each and everyone of us and the Doctors.

This is a surgeon like no other, he is amazing. through the time having not only getting to know him in the siminar he was very informative and caring. I first went to him about 9 months ago having Cigna Health Care and was denied. His staff not only help me through the appeal process but was very caring even though it didn't go through. So then 8 months later I came back to see Him with United Health care and a week later i was APPROVED and a great feeling that was knowing I was on my way to a New life and this great staff of his made it happen..2 days counting and I am nervous and ready thanks to Dr. Spivak and his staff..I will inform you all of the out come.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he is a very knowledgable man with a good bedside manner and the more I learn/ see/ hear about him that impression just grows. The office staff is wonderful, Shirley has been especially helpful and patient with any questions or concerns I have had. I have yet to see anything that I don't like about him. From what I have heard and read he has a good aftercare in place. He was very open about the risk of the surgery and was very responsive to any questions or concerns I had. I thank God for Dr. Spivak. Through God using him and guiding his hands Dr. Spivak has gave me a new and improved life here on earth. I pray that God continues to bless and guide Dr. Spivak.

Dr. SPivak is the best! He is very patient and kind. I was referred to him by previous surgery patients and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

The office staff is very nice and very knowledgeable. He has a nurse who has been through the surgery so she is a wealth of knowledge as well.

Dr. Spivak's fees include 1 year post op care. He highly recommends post op care and group support meetings.

He has a wonderful bedside manner and is very involved in your care at the hospital. His surgery competence is first rate and he was a pleasure to work with!

My initial impression of Dr. Spivak was positive and has remained so. His office staff have been very professional and caring.

Patients must know that Dr. Spivak requires future patients to attend one time the monthly orientation he holds, prior to an initial appointment.

I am a Medical Social Worker by profession. I would rate Dr, Spivak's approach both prior to, during surgery and post-op as excellent.

His bedside manner was very caring, cordial and informative. He is one of the most competent surgeons I have met in my life.

The office staff seem to be nice. I have not had enough experience to say whether I recommend Dr. Spivak and his staff. I might be wrong but there does not seem to be dietician on his staff. I will be able to share more once I have the sugery for the Lap band.

Dr.Spivac is friendly, informative, and profesional my impression of him has not changed overtime, his office staff is efficient, profesional.

He is from Israel & studied at Tel-Aviv University which was important to me for personal reasons. He covered the risks of surgery in the lecture he offers that is required before he will operate on you. He also did a brief overview of the procedure at our initial consultation.

Overall Dr. Spivac has been a good Dr. I would rate him to be a 7 out of 10. But he is the only Dr. I have had any experience with, so my judgement is limited.

I was very impressed with Dr. Spivak on my first visit with him. He was very caring and understanding. He took the time to answer all my questions (and I had alot of questions) with no hesitation. Dr. Spivak is very caring to his patients. He also knows his business. I would recommend him to others who are interested in this type of surgery. This surgery is not to be taken lightly. This is another example he makes sure you understand before he procedes with anytype of surgery. His office staff are caring as well and understand your needs.

I started with Dr. Beall in Tyler, Texas, but was turned down by insurance. Now have new insurance and I'm scheduled for RNY with Dr. Hadar Spivak in Houston. I went to Dr. Spivak for the purpose of having the Lapband, but he recommended the RNY for me.
I'm scheduled for June 15, 2004. I've had nothing but good experiences so far with Dr. Spivak and his office.

I thought he was a very nice man, he had a siminar to explain all the different procedures and show the pros and cons of each procedure. His office staff is really friendly and helpful. I think he is very professional but has a great bedside manner.
I believe he is very competent and extremely knowledgable in his field. I do not have anything to say about him except positive things because my experience so far has been positive. I am almost three weeks post-op.

I love Dr. Spivak. He seems to be very concerned about his patients. I have spoken to him on several occassions. I am currently waiting for surgery approval. His staff is very helpful and nice. They can be a little disorganized at times, but overall my experience has been pleasant. Dr. Spivak is very personable and seems to be extremely smart and knowledgable. He has a wonderful website that is very informative. He was very open in talking about the risks of surgery and the precautions he takes. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate him a 9. I will let you know more after my surgery.

I first attended a siminar on the Gastric Band and he is the only one in Houston that I found to do this procedure. However, my insurance will not approve The lap band, so I had to convert to the Roux-en-y. Dr. Spivac is very nice and answered all my questions. He was not offended at all by me asking his success rate, complication rate, etc. I had went to the NeWeigh center first(They were not a preferred provider) and they have a great educational booklet and a lot of helpful information. I was not given any handouts, but his siminar was very informative. He has a female FP doc working with him on Thursdays who has had the Lap Band, she was especially sweet. She spend a lot of time with me and was GREAT. Dr. Spivak was very nice. They said they have a great after care program, but I am not having surgery until June 8th. We will see.

My first impression of Dr Spivak was positive. He appears to be patient and understanding and I really felt like he understood me. I feel like he really wanted to help me. I attended the group seminar on March 31 and felt like he answered all of my questions. He addressed the pro's and con's of gastric bypass surgery so there would be no confusion. I have chosen to go all the way with the gastric bypass because I feel I need a permanent solution. I went for my private consultation on April 12....he gave me the green light....now we are waiting on my insurance to respond. Please pray they approve me.

Dr. Spivak was very knowledgeable about the information he passed along to everyone at the seminar. The seminar is required by him and his staff before you can be seen at his office. As doctors go, he is more than willing to answer any questions and go over any concerns you might have. I had originally been interested in having the lap band surgery, but after going to the seminar and doing a lot more inquiring, I have decided to do the bypass. He was very helpful in explaining the mechanics of both surgeries. I would highly recommend him and will do so. When I went to my PCP, I was told he would follow my success and if I would pick up some literature and information from Dr. Spivak, he would appreciate it. He said he has patients weekly ask him about WLS and would appreciate someone that follows their patients so closely afterwards. I felt very confident that Dr. Spivak is a skilled surgeon and knows his procedures. His very own confidence shines through and I felt very comfortable proceeding with my plans to have WLS. His staff has been both helpful and pleasant, not to mention how patient they have to be with all the patients. Once someone finally makes the decision to inquire about this surgery, they are excited and bouncing off the walls. The staff is very gracious and supportive.

I think Doctor Spivak is a wonderful surgeon. He is confident, experienced and very knowledgable. What more could you ask for in a surgeon? He has a terrific disposition and came to visit and check on me every day in the hospital. I was surprised however that my insurance company has had registered nurses call 2 times since I have been home, just to see how I am doing. They asked about what my incision sites look like and how I feel and what have I ate. And Doctor Spivak's office wasn't called at all. I asked for a pain prescription refill and they didn't approve it for about a week. I could have called and checked into to it.... but after the day or 2 that I requested it, I didn't still need it that much. If I had called, I am quite sure they would have went out of their way to help. They are really really good with insurance approvals for surgery... maybe that occupies a lot of time for them. Anyway... Dr Spivak is a WONDERFUL surgeon and I couldn't have ever hoped for a better doctor and that was the most important thing to me when picking a surgeon anyway!!!

Kathy C.

My first impression of Dr. Spivak was that he knew what he was talking about and that he truly cared about his patients.
Before you can even get an appt to see him, you must attend a seminar. At the seminar, he talks about the types of surgeries that he performs, pros and cons of each, risks involved and what you can expect as a result. I found the seminar to be very interesting and he takes the time to answer any and all questions raised.
The second time I saw him was in his office for my initial visit, where again, he asked if I had any questions and again went through the different types of surgeries. He asked which I wanted and why, and then made him recommendation based on his examination and questions asked. I was very impressed.
His office staff is terrific. They too are very knowledgable regarding the surgeries, and totally up to date with dealing with the insurance companies. I didn't really do anything, they took care of all the paperwork and I was approved within 2 weeks.
The morning of surgery, of course I saw Doc and he asked if I was ready to begin a new part of my life. Again...quite impressed.
My husband however was not as impressed, as he said that when the surgery was over, Doc came in and told him everything went well and I was in recovery, and then left. Hubby said Doc didn't give him time to ask any questions and he just seemed in a hurry to get out of there. I again saw him a couple of times during my hospital stay, (I really don't remember the first couple of days, so I don't remember if he was there every day of not...I'm sure he was.) My first visit back to the office a month later was as terrific as the first time. Again the office staff was courteous and very friendly. I would very highly recommend Dr. Spivak and his staff.

I went to Dr. Spivak's required seminar on March 31, 2004. It was about 2 hours long with TONS of useful information. Included in this time was a time of Q & A with him and 2 former/current patients. It was great getting to hear first hand information from people who had gone through it already. The two who were there had opted for the LAP BAND. Dr. Spivak seems to be incredibly knowledgable. He seems to actually care about the people he's helping and was very open and honest with all questions asked. I felt very comfortable with him to the point that the very next day I made my first appointment with him. I had been checking around with other doctors and had even called a few offices to get information, etc. I felt like just a number with most offices I called and never made appointments with these other offices.

I continue to be impressed with the compassionate and professional dedication that Dr. Spivak demonstrates to his patients. He strives to be forthright and honest in his expectations of the lap band process and what it will, or in some cases will NOT do for an individual. If he doesn't feel that you are a good candidate for the surgery, he will suggest an alternative and let YOU be the judge. He is easy to talk to and is genuinely concerned with your weight loss success.

3/22 - Okay, I had my 1st consultation w/ Dr. Spivak. He is wonderful and was very thorough at answering all my questions. This is how it went: 1. I saw Dr. Spivak, a brief Q & A, took some weight/height measurements & listened to my chest, and felt for swelling in my legs & stomach. 2. He sent me to see the person regarding the paperwork (sorry, I forgot her name!) 3. She then gave me a diet to be on until the surgery, gave me a form to sign that states anything and everything that could go wrong w/ the surgery including death - kind of a notice that needed to be signed and witnessed (gulp!) 4. She then gave me a form which had listed the types of tests that needed to be ordered by my PCP, the results need to be screened prior to scheduling the surgery. That was it! They then sent me on my merry way.

Dr. Spivak is great. He staff is wonderful and very helpful. Dr. Spivak got right to the point and answered any and all questions I had. I've enjoyed my experience so far and look forward to dealing with him in the future.

My impression of Dr. Spivak was very positive from the first time I saw him at the required seminar Nov, 2003. When I went for my first appointment (Feb, 2004)I found him to be calm (important to me!) and straight-forward. I also met with Dr. Hewitt who I also liked--great sense of humor! Both docs gave all the risks and cautioned me not to expect to lose 100% of my excess weight. The office staff has been really great so far--I've spoken with Rachel a couple times and then Michelle and am so impressed with their attitude, 'cause I know they are very busy but they took the time to talk with (and reassure)me. PLUS, I feel like I'm a person to them and not just a number on a chart... About the only negative so far is a LONG wait. But I'd rather have a long wait and then a good experience then get in right away but not be pleased with the treatment in the examining room!!!

Dr. Spivak was very friendly and courteous. He was very thorough in his explanation of what was involved with the surgery and the risks associated. He was very patient, I asked a lot of questions. His office staff was very helpful and friendly. I think that Dr. Spivak would let you know if he didn't think you were a good candidate for the surgery. He looks over you medical history and pays attention to what you have to say and how well you understand what will be involved in the pre, during, and post surgery. He let me know that he was at my disposal especially after surgery. He was very honest when I asked him questions about relocating to Houston from Baytown. I am however a little concerned that his specialty up to this point is Lap Band. He has not performed a lot of Lap RNY procedures, but he has had success on the ones he has, and he appears to be confident.

Feb. 14, 2004

Carolyn H.

Before I decided on a surgeon to use, I made numerous phone calls and received many names of doctors to investigate. I was referred to Dr. Spivak by another bariatric surgeon in Houston; however after being told that the surgeon I called had not performed any lap band procedures (but was going to in the near future), they gave me Dr. Spivak's name.

I formed my first impression of Dr. Hadar Spivak before I actually met him. I read alot about him on the internet from his website, the HoustonAreaBandsters website, and also the obesityhelp.com website and also read comments about him from others who had previously had lap band surgery performed by Dr. Spivak. I researched him thoroughly through the Texas Medical Association and also the Civil Court Clerk's office in his county. Needless to say, I was impressed with the information I was provided.

After I met him at my first consultation appointment, my opinion of him was enhanced. He was most gracious, appeared extremely competent and professional. His office staff was responsive, pleasant, and proficient. There is nothing I disliked about Dr. Spivak or his staff except the distance between us (425 miles).

Future patients should realize that lap band surgery is very specialized and they should not entrust their care to just anyone they find on the internet or in their hometown. They should know that Dr. Spivak has performed over 600(?)lap band surgeries with a phenomenal success rate.

One couldn't ask for a more thorough aftercare program than the one Dr. Spivak offers. It provides a systematic and comprehensive plan which is explained in detail.

At my first consultation visit with Dr. Spivak, he explained every aspect of the surgery, and clarified all the risks and problems that could occur. I felt totally comfortable with him and he stayed with me until every question or concern was addressed. He assured me that, should I have difficulty, there was no situation that could develop that would prevent me from getting to him in time for him to handle it himself. I was extremely concerned about this issue, since, in my opinion, there are no bariatric surgeons in my region who are even half as competent as Dr. Spivak.

Overall, on a scale of 1-10, I would rate Dr. Spivak "over the top." His brilliant mix of surgical competence and bedside manner exceeded my expectations implausibly.
He and his office staff are incomparable (Brenda, Rachael - this means you !!!! Y'all are the best of the best.

my aunt found dr. spivak through a great recomendations of doctors and surgeons she works with. so right after she told me i called up the office and found out about a seminar that i had to attend. i signed up for the seminar and found out more information on the surgery. a couple of months went by and a friend of mine wanted to know about the surgery so we went to another seminar.
when i met dr. spivak i felt that he was a caring, soft spoken individual who knew a lot and was very interested in answering all the questions that a person may have.
i spoke to his staff a lot on the phone through out the approval and pre-op testing stages. they were very helpful and very nice. (i am glad cause i bugggggggeeeeddddd them a lot!)
when you meet dr. spivak do not be afraid to ask him or his staff any and all questions that you may have about anything.. they will answer and they will ask you if you have any questions.
overall i would rate dr. spivak a 9.5

He was very professional.

He is also very caring toward his patients and wants to see us suceed.

Very nice. I think they need more staff though.

The fact that he's in Baytown!

I saw the Dr in an office in Park Plaza in the Med Center. The reception area was rather spartan and my guess was that it was a newly added location. The actual examining office appeared well equipped. The Dr and staff were friendly and patient in explaining options and procedures. I was denied after the first letter. The denial letter took 30 days to arrive from the insurance. I thought there was no hope because they told me they don't approve Adjustable lap band surgery and suggest I try the alternatives. After care was strongly emphasized during the initial consultation. The surgical risks were clearly spelled out in the usual manner, up to and including death.

I went to the seminar and it was very informative. My first impression is that he is very knowledgable about the procedures and I like the fact he is very involved in the medical community by writing articles and attending many scientific meetings. He is very friendly and personable. My consult is next week and I will tell you more.

Dr. Spivak is personable, professional, and knowledgeable. What more could a patient ask for?
I believe he was up-front about all aspects of the lap band and the surgery.
The office has gotten quite busy in the past several months and you might have trouble getting past the voice mail, but be patient. My dealings with everyone there have been very good. I suppose the only negative thing I have to comment on is the fact that they are very busy, but that can also be looked at as a positive. Who would want to see a doctor that has no patients? :)
I give my full recommendation for Dr. Spivak!

I attended his mandatory pre-consult seminar. It was very informative and he was very nice. He was not judgemental and he also knows that obesity IS a disease. He appeared to be genuinely care about our well being.

He also described the aftercare and said that if we could not stick to the schedule of visits or the recommended diet then we should not have the surgery.

He explained all of the risks in a way that we could all understand. He answered all of our questions and was very honest about the complications that could arise.

I believe he will be a wonderful surgeon. He is very personable and cares about his patients and what he can do for them.

I Look Forward to my surgery and will keep everyone updated on the progress.

My impression of Dr. Spivak and his staff are outstanding. He takes the time with all his patients, if you have a problem or a concern..don't worry. I would highly recommend Dr. Spivak to perform this life saving event on any new patient.

To me Dr. Spivak, is the very best he took time on the initial visit answered all 50 of my questions. Gave me the good the bad and everything in between. He was ok with answering my husbands questions and concerns. Never rushed or pushed just educated me.
I have an even higher opion for Dr, Spivak today thanever before.

The office staff is A+ they work really hard and get results.

The thing I guess I like least is location I wish he was next door ;)

He no longer does the RNY ;(
He is proactive for follow up care and rightly so.

They implemented one the lady that started came to see me in the hospital. I jsut live to far to be active.

The risks were covered extremely well.
I rate Dr. Spivak and staff A++++++++

He is fantastic in all areas.

2/14 I attended the required seminar given by Dr. Spivak yesterday. It was informative, but mostly covered general questions that I have already done research on. It was a long 3 hour drive to Baytown, but I feel it was worth it. Dr. Spivak was very soft spoken, but his confidence in the LAGB has convinced me that this is the right wls for me.

Dr Spivak has impressed me from the very first! And my opinion has not changed at all over the last year, he is very knowledgeable and has his patients care and interest as his top priority.

His office staff is usually very supportive

I thought Dr. Spivak was wonderful. Very direct and to the point. Didn't beat around the bush. His staff was so nice. I am so excited. It was a little bit of a drive back and forth to Austin in one day but well worth it.

I attended Dr Spivak's Seminar. He and he staff were very formative. The following week I went for conseltation. He has great bedside manners. His staff seems to very professional. I have a hard time reaching them on the phone sometimes. After my surgery I tried calling two days after I got home from the hospital. Left message on the machine and no one returned any of my messages. Left four messages, four different days, plan on mentioning this when I go to get my staples removed. Called following Monday and got to speak to someone. Mentioned what had happened and they were going to get to this problem right away. I am sure they will. Hope so, anyway. They gave me lots of literature to read about my diet and it has been most helpful. I would recommend anyone to use Dr. Spivak.

I have been very pleased with Dr. Spivak. I feel that he cares about his patients and wants them to be successful. One of the nurses at the hospital said in passing "only the best for Dr. Spivak's patients". This tells me that he expects everyone to treat us with respect and concern. I have friends that he has referred to other surgeons for Gastric Bypass because he didn't feel they were good candidates for Lap-Band. He has made me feel comfortable with calling for any reason and I know he wants me to be successful. I rate him a 10 at this point in time.

Dr. Spivak is very personable and encouraging. I felt very comfortable with him during our first meeting. He seemed to be open ansd up front about the risks and benefits of surgery.

Dr. Spivak's staff have been wonderful with assisting me during my appeals process. I also appreciate the openness about fees and cost of aftercare.

I have not had a negative experience as of yet, and hopefully I won't. Although, I would have liked to have been notified immediately when my first denial letter was received by the office. It would have allowed me to start my appeals process sooner.

A very nice, caring individual. He seems very patient and willing to spend all the time he needs to spend with you to answer all your questions. He was very honest about the pro's and cons of the surgery and also honest in his estimation of what he thinks I should realisticly expect to lose.
He has a slight accent, but I had no trouble whatsoever understanding him or communicating with him.
His office is a little hard to communicate with, as the answering machine is on quite a bit and sometimes it takes the office staff a couple of days to return your call. When you do get a live person, they all are knowlegeble, caring and helpful.
Pre-surgical tests and diet were addressed with some handouts. Aftercare has not been addressed so far.

I met with Dr. Spivak at the end of August. I was thrilled that I was able to get an appointment(and surgery date)at my convenience. I live several hours away and had to be very selective with the appointment date/time for work and travel purposes.
His staff is very busy but always curtious. I think I talked to the ten times the day I got an approval letter!
Dr. Spivak was informative but brief, which a little unsettling at first since I had not attended a seminar. I left his office wondering if he had gotten enough information to "plead my case" with insurance. Sure enough!
This is new territory for me soI am very happy to have found an experienced and confident surgeon.
I was told that I need to return to his office a minimum of four times in the next year (since I don't live in town)and that his staff is always available by e-mail and telephone. So far- they get rave reviews for patient satisfaction!

Dr. Spivak was quick and to the point. He is obviously a busy man and I appreciated him not wasting either of our time discussing things I've already researched or heard at his seminar. He's not there to talk you into this procedure-that is your decision. His staff is great-by the time your post-op you'll feel like they are family. Between Dr Spivak's skills and his staff's courtesy and compassion-you'll feel as if you are in the right hands.

I attended Dr. Spivak's seminar on August 9th and it was very informative. I liked him and he was very patient and answered all questions that were asked of him. My first office visit with him was just 3 days later on August 12th. I really loved... He was so nice and encouraging to me. I scheduled my surgery date that day for Thursday, August 29th. The surgery went fine, except I had a little trouble with gas, but other than that, I went back to work by the following Wednesday.

dr spivak is great and his staff is terrific. Anika is so wonderful and has helped get all my test scheduled. I finished the last of my test today 8/30/02 and im having the surgery on 9/5/02. Dr spivak gives you the answer to all questions and his seminar is wonderful and all that are even considering wls should attend. I like the type lap band surgery because recover time is much quicker and less risky.

I have attended Dr. Spivaks seminar this past week and I am very impressed with him. I have been doing a lot of research lately and he confirmed a lot of the information and explained things I didn't yet know. He gave lots of time for everyone to ask questions and was very patient with the answers. I have an appointment with him on July 2nd for my consultation. I hope to have surgery in August. From what I have heard about United Health Care I don't think I will have a problem with approval. God willing.

UPDATE April 2001:

Dr. Hadar Spivak performed the new adjustable lap band surgery on me on Wednesday morning and I was home from the hospital on late Thursday night. Dr. Spivak did a great job it seems so far, and his staff worked with me every step of the way.
I am quite grateful for his work. The new Adjustable Lap Band was definitely the best choice for me to facilitate WLS.

This has been the weirdest and longest journey for me. It started in December when I decided that I would not spend another full calendar year in the shape that I am in.
I hit the ground running to find a surgeon.

I went to Dr. Spivak seminar recently and found it very informative. I definately want the Adj Gastric Band. I understand my primary insurance co Aetna will not pay because they still consider it experimental. However, we are looking into my husband getting me signed up on his insurance and trying that route.

I decided to work with Dr. Spivak because of his experience with the Lap-Band and recommendation of prior patients. Dr. Spivak has done 250 banding, which is about 200 more than most other American doctors performing this procedure. In person, I found Dr. Spivak to be personable, knowledgable and kind. He made sure I understood the procedure as well as his philosophy on the tool for weight loss and he gave me the time to ask any questions.

I went to Dr Spivaks seminar at the end of
July. I went in feeling that RNY was the surgery
for me. When I left I knew I wanted the lap
band. I like Dr Spivak from the minute he started
talking. He answered every single question
that was asked of him and made sure that every-
one understand his answers. We saw a film of the
surgery and it was explained in detail to us.
His office staff-Michelle, Brenda and Shirley
are super. Couldnt ask for nicer people. I have
the most dealings with Brenda but they are all
really nice. Dr. Spivak explained all the risks
of the surgeries. He also had a patient who was
5 months post-op and had lost 80 pounds there.
She was able to answer questions also and that
was a big help-to actually see someone who had
it done and it was working! He is very gentle,
very kind and doesnt rush you in his office. I
find a lot of doctors want to do that but he
takes his time with you. He was wonderful in
the hospital also-he has a great bedside manner.
He saw me after surgery and a couple of times the
next day when I left. He is surgically very competent
and I would highly recommend him to anyone. I will
also answer any private emails with questions
from anyone interested.

Dr. Spivak was great and so was the staff. His nurses were wonderful. His bed side manner is great. I was very scared of being "put under", but it was fine. I can't think of any thing I do not like about Dr. Spivak.

I can't say much about aftercare yet. I'm still on liquids. I will update after my four week visit.

Dr. Spivak has monthly seminars to introduce people and inform them about the lap-band procedure. He was very informative and considerate. Throughout my entire experience, I felt Dr. Spivak was concerned, very bright, skilled and wanted to hear what I had to say. His office is very attentive and supportive. I had to make many phone calls during my pre op preparation. Dr. Spivak has a lot of pre op work and I felt at times like I was jumping through "hoops". After completing all of the workup, I realized that it was necessary so as to have a successful surgery. Aftercare consists of written material, email addresses of other patients, and you can call anytime to the office. He does not have a structured aftercare program, but I was informed about support groups and websites. The risks of surgery were spelled out in the seminar and his nurse went over the disclosure with me before I signed. I rate Dr. Spivak very highly. Both surgical competence and bedside manner were great!

I first met him at a seminar he had. He seemed nice and very knowledgeable.
I then went and read up on him more at his web site which is very informative. www.lap-surgery.net
At the 1st office visit, he was frank and to the point, very knowlegable and sincere. He was honest with me about
surgery and complications. He was the doctor who did the clinical trial for the adjustable lap band and we discussed
this surgery but he helped me to decide that with my insurance and the lap band not being FDA approved the lap VBG
would be best for me.

On the day of surgery he came in to see how I was before hand, and then I saw him several times afterwards.
he also checked on my 2 times the day after surgery. I am very glad that I chose him, becuase the recovery
from Lap surgery has not been bad at all. I definatly suggested going Lap if you can.

I finally went to Dr. Spivak's seminar about 2 weeks ago. It was very informative, but it left me baffled. I was originally wanting the RNY, but when I left the seminar I was tossed between the RNY and the Banding. I'm hoping that Dr. Spivak can lead me in the right direction during the consultation. The seminar boosted my morale into researching my insurance plan. Everything is now in place and I finally have an appointment on May 14,2001 for my consultation. I can not wait!!! Dr. Spivak covered every incidental for each type of bariatric surgery and was very knowledgable. They showed us films of the actual surgery(s) and described the risks involved with each. He even had a couple of clients come to the seminar so that anyone could ask them questions. Dr. Spivak loves to talk! I asked a few questions, all of which required a speech from him, but he always ended up answering my questions to the fullest. He had an answer to every question, even if it was something you did'nt want to hear. I feel that he is an honest, well educated doctor that is in this for the long run for all his patients. I strongly believe that he feels if his patients dont succeed, then neither does he....and he will succeed!
Updated 06/15/01:
Dr. Spivak has suggested the band surgery would be best for me, but I will need to have a scope look at my esophogus before surgery to insure there are no hernias. A person electing to have the band can not have hernias because of the location of most hernias is where the band is placed, unlike fixing hernias during a bypass surgery. So, I am still in the waiting mode for my PCP to order the scope. I have also been waiting for the approval of the band from the FDA...and surprise, it was approved...YEAH!

My surgery was done as scheduled on May 1st 2001. I was in the hospital 5 days and now I am 5 weeks post op. Dr. Spivak was great he came into to check on me every day and sometimes twice a day. I have lost 21 lbs in 33 days and I am feeling great!!!

I reviewed several surgeons in my local area when I made the choice to see Dr. Spivak. The very next day after I had made an appointment to visit his office for a consulation, to my suprise Dr. Spivak was on my local news informing the public of the new silicone ring/band procedure that he and other cutting edge doctors are trying to get approved with the FDA. Dr. Spivak is one of only a few doctors allowed to do clinical trials on this procedure.

From my initial consultation until now I have felt as if I am in the best hands possible. His office staff is very nice, although he could stand to staff a person to answer the phone full time. Other than that I have no complaints in regards to his office staff.

When I met Dr. Spivak he was very informative of the risks and the benefits to all of the different types of WL Surgery. Only after a lenghty discussion about each one did he and I collectively make the decision to have the gastric bypass over the other surgeries available. I felt as if I have definetly made the right choice in choosing Dr. Spivak as my surgeon and that I really won't have to choose between competence and bedside manner because he has got both.

I met with Dr. Hadar yesterday. March 22, 2001, he was very nice and made me feel very comfortable. He answered all my questions and concerns I had about the Lap-band procedure. I am very excited to have the surgery, and Brenda and Shirley in his office, are GREAT!!

03/09/01 - Well. I made my first contact with Dr. Harbergs office today. They took down my insurance info, and promised to call back by monday. They were very nice, and extemely helpful. I will update when I get my appointment. Thanks all.

3/11/01 - I just wanted to update and say that I have changed doctors to Dr. Spivak. Dr. Harberg only does VGB's and I am truly satisfied with the research I have done on RNY's. I feel that this is surgical option for me. Dr. Spivak's office staff are really sweet and informative. They have answered what few questions I had left, and are being totally supportive.

3/25/01- Just wanted anyone who was interested that Dr.Spivak has a wonderful web site. (WWW.Lap-Surgery.net) So not use the ().

04/03/01 I had my consultation yesterday and Dr. Spivak and his office were really nice. He explained in detail the procedure it bennefits and its risks.

My first impression was that he is very thorough and wants you to make an educated decision. My opinion of Dr Spivak is still, and continues to be that he is an exceptional person.

My husband and I have found his staff to be very supportive and understanding. I couldn't ask for more.

I truly appreciated that Dr Spivak wanted me to be sure I knew what I wanted. He did not leave me feeling like he knew more than me. I can't stand for a health practioner of any kind to act like God. That would never a problem for Dr Spivak. He is down to earth.

Future patients should know that they truly need to listen to Dr Spivak when he insists they watch information on his practices or that they do their own homework. This is an major change in your anatomy and you have to be able to deal with the changes in your life.

Dr Spivak emphasizes aftercare as much as any other surgeon I would imagine. He makes sure that you understand what steps you need to make in the care of your incision...etc. He also sent me home with several pages of information on food and vitamin supplements.

Dr Spivak addressed the risks and wanted to know what information I had found and where. Overall, I would rate him Top Drawer! I truly find his competence and bedside manner exceptional!

I understand that the paragraph below and that 100% positive reviews are possible suspect. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a critical person. I don't let anyone get away with making my mind up. I genuinely had a completely wonderful experience, other than the pain. The pain was kinda expected, as I would imagine it is with all other surgeries.

dr. spivak is wonderful. he makes you go to his seminar before he will even see you in his office. seminar very informative. i went for my visit he spent all the time i needed with him. my insurance was approved quickly. he is one of the only few who are approved for the new banding procedure although i am having the rny lap. i would recommend him to anyone

Dr. Spivak seems very knowledgeable. He does VBG laproscopically. I hope to have the new lap-band procedure and Dr. Spivak is one of a handful of doctors in the U.S. who will be approved to do the procedure.

He does not have a structured aftercare program at this point, so that is disappointing to me. He has recently moved to Houston, I think from Tel Aviv, where he has performed various types of gastric surgery for years.

When I first went in to consult with Dr. Spivak I was a little uneasy since he was new to the area. He made me very comfortable and I felt he was very knowledgable in his area. It took about a month to get all the letters and referrals written up and sent in. I recieved approval on the first try(amazing considering 2 years earlier I was flat denied by the same company). Dr. Spivak has been approved to do the gastic banding but it is not yet approved for use in the US. When it is he will be doing that procedure liproscopically. Anyway, he tried to talk me into waiting for it to be approved and to do that procedure but I was more than ready to get the VBG done and over . THis made me nervous that he didn't want to do the VBGbut I stuck it out. On July 31,2000 I went in and Dr. Spivak did a VBG on me LIPROSCPICALLY! Other than being ill from the anasthia I have recovered wonderfully. I am now 5 days post-op and almost back to normal routine. He was ther at least 2-3 times a day to check on me in the hospital and has been wonderful ever since. I would recommend this man to my mother (and I have). If you have any doubts or questions feel free to e-mail me.

I scheduled my initial consultation on July 31, 2000. Anyone who has been to Dr. Spivak, please write me with feed back! Thank you!!!!

8-1-00 I met with Dr. Spivak yesterday. I absolutely loved him! He was kind, patient, friendly, ethical, knowledgeable, and has a warm smile. Gosh, did I say I liked him???? Seriously though, I went in wanting the RNY after much research on the different WLS's and though he does the RNY, he wants me to further research the VBG before deciding. He thinks with my BMI of ~41 and very few comorbidities, the RNY is a little too invasive. This aggrevated me a little. I'm scared I'll go for the VBG and it will fail. We'll see. I'd love to hear from anyone with information!
